Hello Luke, The tax was not represented as a percentage, rather a weight based scale. The rate was three pennies per pound of imported tea. Without knowing how much each of the 342 containers weighed, it's hard to determine the total cost of the loss. One site I found puts the total weight at 90,000 pounds. This would equal a total loss of about $2700.00 in tax money. ( In today's economy ) Here is the site: Boston Tea Party http://www.multied.com/Revolt/Tea.html In short - the answer you are looking for is 3 pennies per pound. You can view these two pages for clarification: History 115 http://www.seattlecentral.org/faculty/gtamblyn/TIMELINE_1700-1800.htm Tax info ( Google Cached Page ) http://216.239.39.100/search?q=cache:d_ROyA3sXVAC:www.tax-power.com/Tax%2520Power%2520News/Taxnewsletter.doc+boston+tea+import+tax+rate+in+1773+percent&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 I hope this answers your question. If you need further clarification, please feel free to ask before rating this answer, as I would love to be of further assistance. To help with this anwer I searched Google for: boston tea import tax rate in 1773 percent ://www.google.com/search?q=boston+tea+import+tax+rate+in+1773+percent | |
