I'm contemplating purchase of a 2003 Kawasaki Z1000. This bike has
been announced but is not yet available at dealerships. I'm being told
that the first bikes will hit US dealerships in December/January.

I want answers to a few specific questions that will help me with my
purchase. As you respond to them, please add additional information
that would be useful for a buyer.

1. What is the exact dealer cost for this bike. Include their actual
freight charges, and any holdback/other factors . Please provide a
reference source for this info.

2. I've received conflicting information about how many of these bikes
will be made available. Some dealerships have told me "only two for
the entire year". Others have said they expect 6-10. Please provide
information about the total number Kawasaki will produce, how many
will be destined for US markets, and any way to determine how they are
allocated among the US dealerships.

3. What is the total number of Kawasaki dealerships in the US? Is
there a "tiered" system, or are all dealerships essentially equal?

4. Is there any way to buy "direct" or alternative channels other than
the dealerships?

5. Provide specific tip/suggestions on buying strategies when working
with dealerships. Unlike car dealerships that appear willing to
negotiate up from invoice, it seems most bike dealerships not only
start at MSRP but usually tack on $500/$800 for "destination and
prep". How can I buy this bike at or near invoice?
