Good day Google,
Several studies were conducted on ship design by a Finnish consulting
Company named Deltamarin...I wonder if you can find me the following
studies:

REF: YEAR: TITLE:
233	1999	COGES operation profile study for Millennium class
229	1999	COGES operation profile study for Vantage class
228	1999	WR-21 ICR vs COGES in RCI cruise ship
222	1999	WR-21 for use on a passenger cruise ship
159	1997	Gas turbine potential for marine applications

Their web site is:
http://www.deltamarin.com/index.html

Thank you,

There are some excellent synopses on the Internet, though they're
certainly not the entire study. Would that suffice?

Of course, Deltamarin is the best source of the full studies.

Best regards,

Omnivorous-GA

Dear Omnivorous,

How long are these synopses? Of course, I am not looking for short
articles that talk in general terms about these five closely linked
subjects.. I'd rather things that contains detailed specifications
about the COGES, WR-21 (ICR) in COGEN configurations..specifications
of operation profile like the process steam consumption, fuel
consumptions over a range of power for the Millennium, Vantage
Classes..detailed comparison between different merits of COGES and
COGEN configuration on board large cruise ships.

Thank you.

Hello,

QUESTION

The customer needs to locate (and obtain copies) of several
engineering reports by Deltamarin Ltd, a marine consulting, design,
and engineering company located in Raisio, Finland.

ANSWER

The short answer is that these documents are internal engineering
reports which are not in the public domain. However, it may be
possible to obtain (buy?) copies by contacting either Deltamarin *or*
the clients who paid for them.

The reports of interest can be located in the Deltamarin Website:

Deltamarin queries have three entries: <search reference product>.
The search entry can be any keyword. The reference entry must be
selected from the references pulldown). The product entry must be
selected from the products pulldown).

For example, the Deltamarin query <millennium millennium calculations>
returns 11 documents. Some of these documents include *some*
numerical calculations, mathematical formulae, naval engineering
drawings, comparative analyses with tabulated and/or plotted data, and
other design details. For example:

"The Royal Caribbean Millenium Class Cruise Ships - from studies to
virtual reality." Presented at the 21st Marine Propulsion Conference
"Propulsion in the New Millennium", Athens, Greece on 23.3.1999 by
Jari Nurmi, M. Sc. (Mech. and El. Eng.) Manager, R&D.

"Development of passenger cruise ship for the next century, based on
new conceptual Thinking and Gas Turbine Machinery." Presented at "The
21st Century Cruise Ship" conference in London, 15.4.1999 by Markku
Kanerva, M. Sc. (Nav. Arch.), Director, Business Development.

"Machinery and Ship Concept Studies." A list of 312 engineering
reports. The client is "confidential" for some, but not so for most.
Therefore, it may be possible to obtain (buy?) copies of the reports
by contacting Deltamarin *or* the clients who paid for them. The five
reports you mention are included in this list, and none of the clients
is "confidential":

REF YEAR TITLE
CLIENT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
233 1999 COGES operation profile study for Millennium class
CELEBRITY
229 1999 COGES operation profile study for Vantage class RCI
228 1999 WR-21 ICR vs COGES in RCI cruise ship RCI
222 1999 WR-21 for use on a passenger cruise ship
ROLLS-ROYCE
159 1997 Gas turbine potential for marine applications EGT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beyond the Deltamarin website, several attempts were made to locate
copies of these reports in other institutions. Specifically:

Helsinki University of Technology
http://www.hut.fi/
-- Maritime Institute of Finland (MIF)
-- Dr Matti Hakala, tel. 456 6100, Matti.Hankala@hut.fi (odd years)
-- Prof Petri Varsta, tel. 451 3500, Petri.Varsta@hut.fi (even years)
-- MIF researchers may have access to the Deltamarin reports.

Also:

University of Helsinki
http://www.helsinki.fi/eng/search/index.html

National Technology Agency of Finland
http://www.tekes.fi/eng/default.asp
tekes@tekes.fi

General search engines such as Google and AllWeb returned the summary
reports in the public domain, but not the Deltamarin internal reports.
Special searches using CSA and EESE also returned only the published
papers:

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA)
http://www.csa1.co.uk/

Engineering E-journal Search Engine (EESE)
http://www.eevl.ac.uk/eese/

However, EESE returned the following article, which may be of interest
as it provides a recent survey of the same technologies and
marketplace:

"Luxury Liners Go Green", By Michael Valenti, Associate Editor, ME
Magazine, July 1998
http://www.memagazine.org/backissues/july98/features/luxury/luxury.html

Abstract: "As Royal Caribbean Cruises says bon voyage to diesel
engines in favor of aeroderivativegas turbines, passengers will be
able to soak in the sightswith less engine noise, vibration, and
emissions."

SEARCH STRATEGY

1. Started by searching the Deltamarin website, as suggested by
omnivorous-ga and pafalafa-ga.

Note: The Deltamarin search engine returns differents lists of
documents for minor variations of the keyword's spelling.

2. Searched various other possible sources of copies of these results,
including both general and special search engines, and Finnish
universities.

RESEARCH SUMMARY

It was not possible to find copies of the desired reports anywhere
outside Deltamarin Ltd. In order to obtain copies, it is suggested to
contact Deltamarin, the Deltamarin clients who paid for the reports,
and the Maritime Institute of Finland.

Let me know if you have any questions, or need further clarification.

Sincerely,
pelican-ga

No answer to my question was given. (pelican-ga) instead of giving an
answer, went thru telling me how he has been trying to find the
studies required! he gave me the reference numbers of the reuqired
studies which I gave in my question..He should've read my comment
posted on 11/02 where i made it clear that I am aware of the content
of (Deltamarin website) he said "It was not possible to find copies of
the desired reports anywhere outside Deltamarin Ltd".I know that I
have to contact Deltamrin in order to obtain the studies required and
that is what I was asking in my question..

There are actually some pretty detailed summaries buried pretty deep
on the Deltamarin site, like this COGES information on "THE ROYAL
CARIBBEAN MILLENNIUM CLASS CRUISE SHIPS - FROM STUDIES TO VIRTUAL
REALITY"at the link below. Have you seen this already...?

Dear pafalafa,
Thanks for your comment, Yes, I have actually looked at this in many
places, such as the papers of the 21st Marine Propulsion
Conference..The thing is that they havn't included the data used to
come up with these conclusions..what they did is publishing the
summary of outcome from their varous studies..They havn't, for
example, published the fuel consumption of the GT prime movers, or the
expected steam demand (in MW)on these particular ships that are
necessary to calculate the efficiency of the COGES system, which in
turn depends on the amount of the steam used on board...They didn't
mention the actual engine room area required for a large cruise ship
with COGES or COGEN system, before saying it is going to be 900-1800
m^3 less than that of a diesel-electric ship with a comparable power
output.
