Nigel2,

As a weekend duffer, I was curious about the Asian PGA tour and the
qualification standards.

Very similar to the American PGA, there is a Qualifying proces, known
as Q-School, that players who want to play on the Asian PGA Tour must
go through in order to compete in Asian PGA Tour events. Non-exempt
players must play in Stage I of the Q-School. This includes amateurs
with 2 or better handicap as recognized by their country's national
golf association. Exempt status is given to (Taken from the Asian PGA
Tour Website: http://www.asianpgatour.com/forpros/index.asp?id=26916 :

"1A. Past Order of Merit winners not otherwise exempt on the Asian PGA
Tour.
1B. Past Tournament winners not otherwise exempt on the Asian PGA
Tour.
1C. Past winners of the Asian PGA Tour Qualifying School not otherwise
exempt.
1D. Players finishing in 61st - 120th position and those tying in
120th position where applicable on the Davidoff Tour Final Order of
Merit 2001.
1E. 60 players nominated by NPGA's that are Category A (i) Full
Country Members.
1F. The leading 30 players not otherwise exempt and within the top 50
as at December 17, 2001 on the US PGA or JGTO or PGA European Tour
Final Order of Merit.
1G. The leading 20 players not otherwise exempt and within the top 30
as at August 27, 2001 on the PGA Tour of Australasia ANZ Order of
Merit.
1H. The leading five players not otherwise exempt and within the top
30 as at February 26, 2001 on the Southern Africa Tour Order of Merit.
1I. The leading three players not otherwise exempt and within the top
10 as at December 17, 2001 on the Buy.com Tour Order of Merit.
1J. The leading player not otherwise exempt and within the top 10 as
at December 17, 2001 on the Canadian Tour Order of Merit.
1K. The leading player not otherwise exempt and within the top 10 as
at December 17, 2001 on the Tour de las Americas Order of Merit.
1L. The leading 20 players from the Asian PGA's Career Money List.
1M. Nominations of the Asian PGA Board at their absolute discretion."

Those with exemptions only play in the 2nd Stage of Q-School.
