Is there a web-site that contains all (or most) films, movies, and documentaries (or made for television programs) that have ever been made, that a) Can be sorted by the topic or genre: particularly, history b) Includes i) Name of Film ii) Topic (Name of historical person or event or time period) iii) Year film was made or released iv) Short description v) Other key words: topics, people, events, etc. c) Can be cut and pasted into a spread sheet for further sorting. For example, I'm trying to find "all films" that deal with the history of: i) specific countries or regions (Afghanistan to Z...?) ii) specific leaders (Kings, Queens, Presidents, Prime Ministers to ...) iii) specific events (wars, politics, archaeological digs, to current events) If there isn't ONE single web-site, please guide me to your TOP Ten web-sites. Thanks for your help. |

BeckyP, I noticed you have a few unaswered questions about Afghanistan; the comments below do not directly relate to the current question, but to previous questions you've asked. I'm currently in Afghanistan and I have a particular interest in water and agriculture (so your questions about population and water intrigued me). From what I see, estimates about population can only be that; ESTIMATES. The Taliban so destroyed the infrastructure that tracking such a number would be impossible. I've been to refugee camps outside of main Afghan cities where the numbers of people aren't known precisely. And refugees are constantly moving to new camps, and re-patriating at unknown rates. There is a large rural population here. The villages are accessible only by VERY POOR dirt tracks, and are scattered across the desert. There is no method of communication with these people (no power/no phones) other than visiting them directly. Assessing the population of these areas is being done, but it is slow and difficult work. Domestic water supplies in the rural villages, and indeed in urban areas such as Kabul, is primarily hand-dug wells. In many cases the retrieval method is the old bucket on a rope. In some cases, hand pumps have been installed. When a well dries up (and they do all the time), they dig another one. Drinking water wells are routinely contaminated with coliform bacteria; they have no toilets in the villages. Defecation often takes place outside, very near the open wells. Chickens and other livestock can readily defecate into the wells. I saw a child pull up a bucket of water, flick a frog out of the bucket, and then drink from the same bucket. Agricultural water either comes from rivers (via irrigation ditches), or the rare diesel-powered well pump. There was once an extensive system of irrigation canals, including subterranean tunnels called karezes, that provided irrigation water to the deserts. Some of these systems were built and improved over centuries. There were also dams that allowed regulation of irrigation water. The canals, karezes, and dams have almost been wiped out by the soviets, by years of civil war, our war, and by Taliban neglect. Add to this that this country is in a multi-year drought, and you can begin to understand some of the problems. Even near rivers, irrigation systems are in bad shape. There are many perennial crops near rivers that can no longer be reached by irrigation water; these crops are dead. I could go on for longer, but I won't. Just thought you might be interested. This is an interesting country with a proud agricultural heritage that has been almost completely destroyed. I hope we can begin to improve it. |

Animalguy, Thank-you very much for paying attention!! There are a number of reasons that I've been asking these questions. Is there anyway that we can connect via e-mail? Becky |

Beckyp, I would be glad to communicate on this subject via e-mail. However, I'm afraid by giving my address out here I may receive more mail than I would wish. I'm currently serving with the Army, and I have only limited e-mail access and need to keep my inbox to a manageable minimum. I'm not sure if you'd be willing to give yours here. I'll check back here periodically to see. I'm not sure if Google has any other means to connect individuals. Good luck with your searches. |

Animalguy, Go to http://www.lonelyplanet.com Lonely Planet is a major publisher of travel guide books. They also maintain an on-line travel board: Thorn Tree Look on the left-hand side of the page. You may have to register to use the site: To search, to send PMs (private mail). This may take a few minutes. After you are registered, click on the Thorn Tree. This is the LP "branch" that connects you to the "travel discussion board".. Search for BeckyP. Usually, the searh functiion is near the top of the page. You should be linked up to messages that I have posted on the site. Then Click on my name. After that, you should be able to send me a PM. Look at the lower, left corner of the screen. There should be, what looks like an envelope. Click on that. We can exchange addresses. Then continue our conversation BeckyP |
