Where can I find a near-complete listing of all movie titles followed
by the name of the composer of the movie's musical score composer? I
either want a reference book or some format which
I can print out as a list to have at arms legnth of the couch. If
there exists a complete database of movie credits or something which I
can download and reduce to merely those two fields, and then print,
then that would be fine. As a last resort, if I could be shown how to
write code that will read through any CD-ROM movie-guide program, such
as MS's Cinemania and create a file with the desired information, I'd
be
most impressed. |

Hello, verdatum.
Will just US movies do, or do you want a database of movies from other
countries as well? What earliest date would you be happy with? For
example, if we can find a database which goes back to 1950, would that
be okay? (1950 is just a random date.)
Thanks!

verdatum,
According to Sound Track Collector (
http://www.soundtrackcollector.com ), their database contains 33,782
Titles (individual songs from soundtracks + soundtrack albums) from
3,800 Composers. The Internet Movie Database ( http://www.imdb.com )
currently offers 12,563 movies which have soundtrack listings. As you
can imagine, a printout from either source would make a VERY large
printed report.
There are some unbelievably intelligent Researchers here, and it may
be that one of them will be able to come up with something that can
provide what you need. However, my inclination would be to recommend
that you employ the method I use (since I am already half senile),
which is to keep a pen and little notebook handy near the couch, in
case I want to write down movie titles, actors' or characters' names,
soundtrack references, etc. Then later, I look them up on the IMDb or
other website specializing in the information I want.

US movies alone would be fine, though for any major foreign films to
be included would be even more appreciated (I can't say I have a
strong need for for the entire list of bollywood movies just yet ^_^).
Concerning date, I'd really prefer something going back to say around
1930. If such attempts fail however, I'd be willing to settle for a
listing dating as early as 1960.
I hope to use this information the way I currently use my Leonard
Maltin guide. To be surfing around the tv, find a movie that sparks
my curiosity, and be able to quickly find the composer via some
reference source.
As a musician, one can to some extent hear similarities in scores as
you watch movies, "ooo, that sounds like a Elfman score", or worse
yet, "that sounds like someone I've heard before, but I can't even
vaguely remember who!" and I go nuts with the conflict of my fierce
curiosity and the disinclination to either run to my computer, or to
wait for 2 hours to see who it is in the film credits.
You'd be amazed at what I'm willing to print out. As long as it
doesn't take me 6 days of mind-numbing clicking, cutting, and pasting
to gather the information in to a single listing, I'd be completely
fine with printing out a document the size of _War_and_Peace_.

verdatum,
You might take a look at this book. It's intended as a pricing guide,
it's not inexpensive ($63), and it doesn't have info for the last 5
years, but it looks like it contains the information you are
seeking...
