nuria,

According to the Heritage Rare Coins Company, the Liberty $20 coin was
only minted from 1850 to 1907. The Saint Gaudens $20 coin was minted
from 1907-1933, so if you are sure of the year and the dollar value
then it must be this coin and not a Liberty.

If you can confirm this, I can give you an estimate of the coins
value.

nuria,

What you have is a Saint Gaudens $20 "double eagle" coin, as can be
seen here:
http://www.coinfacts.com/DoubleEagles/saint_gaudens_double_eagles/SaintGaudensDoubleEagle.htm

You didn't mention if it was a 1924, 1924-D, or 1924-S coin. All of
them had fairly high circulation rates, but the 1924-D and 1924-S
coins are currently much harder to find. You can find detailed
information about each coin at:

1924 (circulation of 4,323,500):
http://www.coinfacts.com/DoubleEagles/saint_gaudens_double_eagles/1924_double_eagle.htm

1924-D (circulation of 3,049,500):
http://www.coinfacts.com/DoubleEagles/saint_gaudens_double_eagles/1924d_double_eagle.htm

1924-S (circulation of 2,927,500):
http://www.coinfacts.com/DoubleEagles/saint_gaudens_double_eagles/1924s_double_eagle.htm

Each page lists many recent sales of these coins on record.

If your coin is a plain 1924 that has been in circulation, the
Heritage Rare Coin company estimates the value at between $285 and
$315, and for uncirculated coins at $325 to $500.

For the D and S coins, recent sales have varied widely between $1,000
and $7,000 depending on the condition of the coin (and, of course, the
desire of the prospective buyers)

Good luck!

nuria,

The letter would show up on the coin itself, below the year. An "S"
indicates the coin was minted in San Francisco, a "D" indicates the
coin was minted in Denver, and no letter would mean that the coin came
from the mint in Philadelphia. The letter should be quite obvious, so
if you don't notice it your coin is a 1924 coin minted in
Philadelphia, and unfortunately not one of the rarer ones.

But, for some good news, I found another site with more precise
estimates on 1924 Saint Gaudens coins a bit higher, starting at $430
for coins in good condition, which gets more valuable depending on the
condition of the coin. You can examine the full rates at

nuria,

Unfortunately, the part below the letter is much smaller than the text
of the year of the coin, and I don't have access to either the coin
itself or a very high resolution image of the coin to be able to
answer this definitively. There does seem to be something under the
Philidelphia minted coin, as shown in this image of the 1912 coin:

http://www.coinfacts.com/DoubleEagles/saint_gaudens_double_eagles/Double_Eagle_1912_Obv_Trompeter.jpg

But I cannot tell whether that is supposed to be a letter or an
extension of the graphic image below it.

For a comparison, here is what appears under a 1910-s coin:

http://www.coinsite.com/content/coinpics/gold/1910gsgroman.jpg

The marking under this coin does appear to be different from the 1910
coin, but it is hard for me to make out anything that looks like an
"S".

Your best bet is to either find a good magnifying glass to examine the
coin, or a local coin dealer who would be willing to examine it for
you for free.
