Greetings! This is a fascinating subject and one I explore, too. I
have discovered a few conferences that may be of interest to you.
From http://ijcai.org/
"IJCAI-03, the Eighteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial
Intelligence, will be held in Acapulco, Mexico, August 9-15, 2003. It
will be sponsored by the International Joint Conferences on Artificial
Intelligence, Inc. (IJCAII), and cosponsored by the Mexican Society
for Artificial Intelligence and the American Association for
Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).
"Anthony Cohn, University of Leeds, will be the IJCAI-03 Conference
Chair, and Georg Gottlob, Vienna University of Technology, will be the
IJCAI-03 Program Chair. Francisco Cantu, Monterrey Institute of
Technology, will be the Local Arrangements Chair.
"The web site for the conference can be found at
http://www.ijcai-03.org/"
I included Mexico because travel there is fairly easy from the US,
plus this looks like the "big cheese" of AI conferences. Also, the
AAAI Calendar of Events for 2003 is located at
http://www.aaai.org/Magazine/Departments/calendar.html#01
From American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) located
at http://www.aaai.org/:
"The 2003 AAAI Spring Symposium series will be held March 24-26, 2003
at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The American
Association for Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford
University's Computer Science Department, is pleased to present its
2003 Spring Symposium Series, to be held Monday through Wednesday,
March 24-26, 2003 at Stanford University in Stanford, California."
http://www.aaai.org/Symposia/Spring/2003/sss-03.html
This site also offers more about the Acapulco Conference at the link
http://www.aaai.org/Conferences/IAAI/2003/iaai03.html.
Also, their Fall symposium is coming up soon:
"The American Association for Artificial Intelligence is pleased to
present its 2002 Fall Symposium Series, to be held Friday through
Sunday, November 15-17, 2002 at Sea Crest Conference Center in North
Falmouth, Massachusetts."
http://www.aaai.org/Symposia/Fall/2002/fss-02.html"
The text also states "Submissions for the symposia were due on May 15,
2002. (The Personalized Agents symposium accepted submissions through
September 15. (Please contact Charles Isbell at isbell@isbell.org)"
but you might be able to secure a spot so, if you are able to attend
this, I would email Mr. Isbell right away.
From http://www.icra-iros.com/iros2003/
This is the web page for the organizing committee for the 2003
International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems to be held
in Las Vegas. I found the link to it this site:
http://www.emsl.pnl.gov:2080/proj/neuron/ai/conferences/2003.html
From http://research.microsoft.com/conferences/aistats2003/:
"Ninth International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and
Statistics
January 3-6, 2003, Hyatt Hotel, Key West, Florida - This is the ninth
in a series of workshops which have brought together researchers in
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in Statistics to discuss problems of
mutual interest. The exchange has broadened research in both fields
and has strongly encouraged interdisciplinary work. Papers on all
aspects of the interface between AI & Statistics are encouraged."
From http://www.acm.org/fcrc/
"2003 Federated Computing Research Conference - June 714, 2003 - San
Diego, California - The Federated Computer Research Conference (FCRC)
assembles a spectrum of affiliated research conferences and workshops
into a week long coordinated meeting held at a common time in a common
place. This model retains the advantages of the smaller conferences,
while at the same time, facilitates communication among researchers in
different fields in computer science and engineering. Mornings of FCRC
week will begin with joint plenary talks on topics of broad appeal to
the computing research community. "
There are also affiliated conferences listed towards the bottom of the
site page.
From http://axon.cs.byu.edu/CINC/
"September 26-30, 2003 - The Sixth International Conference on
Computational Intelligence and Natural Computation - Cary, NC
"The fields of computational intelligence and natural computing seek
to apply approaches inspired by natural processes for the solution of
problems that are resistant to traditional methods. Both of these
fields have become broad, with contributions from researchers in
mathematics, physics, computer science, linguistics, neuroscience,
biology, psychology, cognitive science and various engineering
disciplines. When disparate disciplines pursue similar research
agendas, it is often the case that too little cross fertilization of
ideas occur. Thus, the International Conference on Computational
Intelligence and Natural Computing, 2003 (CINC03) seeks to foster the
interdisciplinary exchange of ideas leading to significant advances in
machine intelligence. In conjunction with the Joint Conference on
Information Sciences, 2003 (JCIS03), the conference provides a truly
unique forum for presentation and collaboration across disciplines.
The organizers seek high-quality original papers that contribute to
this goal. All topics relating to computational intelligence and
natural computing are welcome and new, unusual and hybrid approaches
are particularly encouraged. "
I found this in a list of cognitive sciene conferences on the site
located at http://www.cognitivesciencesociety.org/conferences/#jan03
A site offering "Artificial Intelligence Conferences" is located here:
http://www.allconferences.net/Computers/Artificial_Intelligence/
They offer past conferences which may give you ideas for overseas
travel in the future.
I hope my research proves of assistance in your quest. If you need
clarification before rating, please request it and I will be happy to
conduct further research in this area.

Clarification of Answer by

Thank you for your gracious comments and your clarification. While
searching, I came across an article that may interest you. Located at
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/06/20/1023864460978.html, I
discovered it from a link at
http://evonet.dcs.napier.ac.uk/evoweb/membership/individuals/ind1702126158.html
while searching the phrase string "alien artificial intelligence
conference."
The article spoke of "Scientists running a pioneering experiment with
'living robots' which think for themselves said they were amazed to
find one escaping from the centre where it 'lives'. The small unit,
called Gaak, was one of 12 taking part in a 'survival of the fittest'
test at the Magna science centre in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, which
has been running since March." I believe you will enjy the entire
article.
Regarding conferences or symposiums concerning alien intelligence, I
discovered a reference to the SETICon02 Conference and it also refers
to an '03 and '04 conference with location TBA. The information is
located at http://www.setileague.org/srchlite/vol08no2.pdf (you will
need Adobe Acrobat Reader to best view the document - AAR download is
available free at http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/acrobat/readstep.html).
You may be able to subscribe to the newsletter and get the conference
info in that manner.
The '03 Conference information is located at
http://www.setileague.org/seticon/meet2003.htm
The Alternate Realities Conference (ARC) Conference of 2003
information is available at
http://www.dreaman.org/conferenceindex.html where it is stated: "Our
next public awareness event - The ARC - Alternate Realities Conference
is in planning now to be held at its traditional location in Roan
Mountain, Tennessee in June of 2003. For more information about Roan
Mountain, please refer to the conference directory located just above
this text.'
Interestingly, at the web site for Healthcare Information and
Management Systems Society (HIMSS), there was reference to alien
technology. From the site
http://www.himss.org/ASP/ContentRedirector.asp?ContentId=1279:
"The research projects included in this journal converge nicely with
the thought-provoking concepts published in a recent issue of
BusinessWeek, which focused on a look at things to come and
highlighted "21 Ideas for the 21st Century." Themes for the
twenty-first century included
* Machines will be smarter than we are.
* High-tech industries are central to understanding the economic
well-being of nations, regions, firms, and individuals.
* Some refer to the application of technology as the "New Economy"
while others believe we are entering the age of "knowledge-based
capital."
* Use of alien intelligence and interactive intelligent robots will be
explored."
This might be a publication to watch as they could announce a
symposium on the subject. I find it exciting that a health care
management systems publication referenced this field.
In my additional searches, I again stuck to the US and Canada as
locations but I didn't find as many meetings on alien intelligence as
I did on artificial intelligence. That applies to the world in
general, too. If you need further clarification, please request it
and I will be happy to continue my reseach for you in this area.
