I have been trying to do some work with my cd burner, which I have had for a year or two and has worked just fine. Last night I was burning a cd and when I tried to play it, I got this screen: "A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028-00000009. The current application will be termintated." Now no matter what cd I put in the drive, it crashes and I get this error message on a bright blue screen. I have looked in my device manager to see if there is a yellow mark near it...and there isn't. I have gone into setup and don't see anything wrong there. I am totaly in the dark as to what to do to get it working again. | |

Windows 98 is famous for crashes. Normally, a corrupt registry results in such errors. The best thing to do is to re-install windows, and this time, try something other that win98. |

Two things to try: 1) Uninstall and reinstall the burner and associated drivers/software. 2) Check to see if DMA transfers are enabled for this drive. A number of people have reported this error only while DMA was enabled. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for your help. Where do I check for DMA transfers to know if they are enabled.? The comment before you told me to possibly re-install windows...would that be a last hope answer? I hope I don't have to do that because I can't back up anything because my cd burner drive won't work. :) Thanks so much! |

The BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) is caused by a kernel fault. It is not something the user can directly cause. It indicates a bug in the kernel, a faulty driver or faulty hardware. If the driver is misconfigured (due to registry corruption) it could cause the fault. You could try removing the cdr device, and then praying to the Plug&Pray gods that it will be redetected and reinstalled correctly. You could also just see if there's new drivers available on the HP site. Reinstalling is a p.i.t.a but will often clear up problems. Make copies of any data you want to keep, and format the hard drive prior to reinstalling (otherwise you're just wasting your time, the old $#@%-up registry sticks-around unless you format). If you do reinstall something other than 98, verify that drivers are available for equipment. If reinstalling doesn't fix the problem, then something may actually be wrong with your computer. Something with the motherboard's IDE bus, or perhaps the IDE controller chip in the CDR drive. If you sent me a core-dump all those numbers on the BSOD I could tell exactly what was wrong - but it would take hours & hours of grueling work. It's much easier to just reinstall (xps if it was working before). Oh, it's not the letter O-E, it's zero-E, 0x0E which means exception 15, which is a page-fault exception. This means something in the kernel dereferenced a bad pointer. |

A lot of times this can be caused by having more than one cd burning program installed that can burn cdrw's (ie a packetwriter, which allows you to burn to the disc as though it were any other drive). If you have more than one cd burning program installed, removing one of them should solve the problem. Also, if you want to stick with windows 98, it is reletively easy to reinstall the operating system, bringing back the correct copies of critical system files, without actually losing any data. I've done it a dozen times (mostly on the same computer no less), with few side effects. Basically you simply do not delete your windows installation, then you put in your install disc, boot to dos, and run setup. When it asks where to install windows, install on top of your current windows 98 installation. This procedure works excellently for windows 95 and 98, but does not work for windows 2000 and xp nearly as well. |

I think that was the problem, I did try to use another software program for burning cds. I removed all the programs and unplugged the HP cd burner and rebooted and then plugged it back in to see if the computer Plug&Play would recognize it...but no luck. I can't reinstall WIN 98 because I can't get a cd to work in that drive. I am really stuck. |
