and "choline" in it. i want a pill that has only those 2 things and
with alot or the highest mg you can find. i want this because i read
that these vitamins together can help stop hair loss. i dont want to
take alot of pills so i was hoping you can find a all in one vitiamin

Hi anonymous777:

Thanks for the interesting question!

Please keep in mind that we here at Google Answers are *not* medical
professionals, so none of what I'm about to tell you should take the
place of professional medical advice. I merely research information
available on the Web and organize my findings. :-)

Firstly, I was able to find a few products that contained both (and
only) inositol and choline. The largest per/tablet(cap) dosage I found
was 500 mg (i.e., 250 mg of each). Here are two places to purchase
such supplements:

Nature's Plus Choline & Inositol 500 mg, 60 tablets
URL: http://www.good-earth.com/nature-s-plus-choline---inositol-500-mg--60-tablets.html
Cost: $11.81/bottle = ~$.20/tablet

Twinlab Choline & Inositol Caps, 500 mg, 100 caps
URL: http://www.n101.com/Static/Products/choline_inositol_caps_0062001234.html
Cost: $8.99/bottle = ~$.09/cap

Inositol, Choline and Hair Loss
*******************************

I was able to find several sources of information about why these two
compounds might be good for stopping hair loss. Included in these
were:

Hair Vitamins - Studies
URL: http://www.salonweb.com/37/studies.htm
Quote: "Choline and inositol are also very important for the
metabolism of hair both in a direct and indirect manner. It has been
noted that thyroxine cannot be made without choline and that rats
become hairless if kept on diets low in inositol . Inositol was
mentioned in the Science Newsletter ( in 1956. It was stated there
that inositol was needed for growth and survival of cells and bone
marrow, eye membranes, embryos, gut and other rapidly growing tissues
like hair follicles....Choline is important in methylation reactions
that result in the formation of thiamines and thymydylic acids from
uracil and deoxyuridilic, respectively. Of great importance is the
occurrence of additional methylation reactions that are believed to
occur after nucleatides are built into polymeric, macro molecular
nucleic acids....Engle (65) found inositol to be an essential growth
factor for normal cells including hair follicle cells. And Wooley
showed that spontaneous cure of alopecia (hair loss) in animals was
dependent on an adequate supply of inositol."

Hair Loss Vitamins
URL: http://www.stophairlossnow.co.uk/Vitamins.htm
Quote: "In laboratory animals, a diet lacking Inositol produced
baldness, but when the vitamin was added to the food of these animals,
the hair grew back again. It was also observed that male animals lost
hair twice as fast as female animals. The result of this experiment
would suggest that males require a higher Inositol intake than
females. An Inositol deficient diet can also cause eczema, a form of
skin irritation.
One doctor in a series of experiments prescribed Inositol together
with other sources of B vitamins to all his balding patients. In
almost all case's hair loss was arrested, in some case's hair growth
was noticeable in as little as one month. In one case hair recovery
was total and not one bald spot remained....Choline supplements
prescribed to balding patients produced significant results to prove
choline's worth in hair loss. Lecithin is a very good source of
choline, at it also supplies inositol, a B complex vitamin with a
particular affinity with choline, these two vitamins work together
well."

Recommended Dosage
******************

I was unable to find any authoritative recommended dosage amounts of
these two substances. However, most sites recommended one (or two) 500
mg tablet/cap per day for hair loss treatment.

One site did give some insight on "maximum" dosages:

anyvitamins.com
Inositol information page
URL: http://www.anyvitamins.com/inositol-info.htm
Quote: :Toxicity and symptoms of high intake - No toxic effects known,
but diarrhea has been noted with the intake of very high dosage of
inositol."
Choline information page
URL: http://www.anyvitamins.com/choline-info.htm
Quote: "Toxicity and symptoms of high intake - The maximum level of
choline has been set for safety at 3.5 g/day. Taking too much choline
could result in your body smelling fishy, may cause nausea,
depression, and could trigger existing epilepsy. Hypotension,
sweating, salivation and diarrhea have also been reported."

Taking Inositol Alone
*********************

Thanks for you clarification request. I was able to find the following
information about taking inositol by itself.

HealthWorld Onlne
URL: http://www.healthy.net/asp/templates/article.asp?PageType=article&ID=1663
Quote: "A therapeutic dosage is usually about 500 mg.; however, it
should be taken with choline and other B vitamins and mainly as
lecithin, which contains the natural balance of phospholipids. I do
not recommend taking separate inositol capsules."

Nutritional supplements: Vitamins and minerals
URL: http://www.arnica.com/homeo/vitamins.html
Quote: "An excess of an isolated vitamin or mineral can produce
according to recent research, the same symptoms as a deficiency of
that vitamin or mineral.
High dose of vitamins B can cause depletion of other B vitamins."

The data seems to point to the fact that taking too much of a single
B-vitamin type can lead to depletion in the other types. That's why it
is not recommended to take just one type alone.
