According to guidestar.org, one of my favorite websites, there are
94678 private non-operating foundations, and 4070 private operating
foundations, or 98748 total. This number is probably some part of a
year old, so the true number is presumably somewhat higher.

(found by using the "advanced search" dialog at
http://www.guidestar.org/search/)

many of these foundations are, of course, quite small; from the same
source, I found that approximately 55,000 of them have income under
$25,000 for the last tax year.

I hope this is what you were looking for, if not, please do ask for a
clarification.

Thanks,
David

Guidestar is a great site, but apparently double counts. According to
the Foundation Center which publishes an annual survey "Foundation
Growth and Giving Estimates", there were 56,582 at the end of 2000,
growing a few thousand a year. That includes independent, corporate
(2018), community (560) and operating (3472).
