Can an employer force you to take a demotion and transfer to a location over 40 miles away? I live & work in Michigan & have worked for a national corporation headquartered in Missouri for almost 28 years. In downsizing, my position was eliminated. I believe they are trying to save the Layoff compensation package by offering me a much lower paying job in a distant location in hopes that I will retire early. I have always received good evaluations, and nothing has been said about dissatisfaction with my work. It's all been about the economic downturn and the necessity of cutting the "budget" in my location. What are my rights/options? Can I refuse the transfer? If I do, can they say I'm quitting and spare their layoff expense? | |
