Dear did60015,
The only reliable source for such data is the Economic Census, by the
U.S. Census Bureau. Unfortunately, the Economic Census is performed
only every 5 years. The data of the 2002 Economic Census will not be
published before 2004/2005, so the most up-to-date information
available derives from 1997. Nevertheless, the '97 figures should
provide a good impression of the numbers of law firms in the USA and
their sizes.
In 1997, there have been 173,716 firms providing legal services with
1,012,092 employees in the USA.
These law firms had the following numbers of employees:
no employees at all - 617 firms
1 employee - 45,299 firms
2 employees - 29,368 firms
3-4 employees - 29,506 firms
5-6 employees - 14,140 firms
7-9 employees - 10,720 firms
10-14 employees - 7993 firms
15-19 employees - 3689 firms
20-49 employees - 5983 firms
50-99 employees - 1461 firms
100 and more employees - 862 firms
