I have a new laptop running XP Pro SP 1 on Road Runner cable service.
My Problem is that I can not access my Yahoo Mail from this computer
at any time. I can however access all other parts of the web. I have
tried the simple things like dumping internet temp files... The
simptoms are that once I click in to Yahoo Mail the computer never
finishes loading. Any attempt to click through resalts in a time out
error. My desktop Mac can access Yahoo mail at the same time through a
phone line. Netscape does the same thing.
Please Help! A new computer is no fun if it doesn't work right |

Hello cedarc-ga,
I'm not sure what the problem would be without personal access to the
machine, but you may want to try this - it is a long shot..
Control Panel > Network connections > [Dial up section]
Does your Road Runner connection show 'firewalled'?
If so,
right click on Road Runner, click properties.
Advanced tab, untick firewall box. Click OK.
Reboot, try Yahoo mail again. If ok, you need to configure the
firewall
to let Yahoo mail in.
Make sure you go back in & re-enable the firewall...

HI gan-ga
I tried as you said with no luck. It's a strange thing. I downloaded
Netscape because I thought it might be a java thing but this diden't
work. It does not seem to be a firewall thing. Someone had me turn off
all the security settings in IE also with no luck. I emailed Yahoo and
got very little help. My ISP says that It's not there problem because
everything else works. I spoke to the computer maker who says reformat
the hard drive and reinstall XP. This sounds to me like "I don't want
to deal with your problem so I'll make you start over".
Another problem connected with this is that after I time out of yahoo
mail I can't connect to anything untell I restart IE.
When you mentioned the personal access did you mean the remote
assistance thing.

Hello again cedarc-ga,
No, I just find it's usually easier to troubleshoot PC problems when
you can see and touch the offending item ;-)
I'll continue to search and see if I can turn anything up for you, but
I'm actually logging off for a while and getting some sleep, so in the
meantime possibly another researcher may find a solution for you.
Assuring you of my best attention,
gan

This has me stumped on first glance too, but I thought I'd mention a
couple of things. The recommendation to reformat and reinstall
Windows XP isn't just a matter of the manufacturer being bitter. :)
While it's a hassle, and you have to make sure you've backed up
important data, often doing a complete format and clean OS install
will get rid of problems that were buried in the system registry or
system files. Many times it's easier to simply start fresh rather
than find exactly where the conflict is.
Also, have you tried deleting your web browser's cookies? I don't
really think that bad cookies on your machine should cause the page to
stall completely, but since it's obviously not working well anyway,
it's worth a try. :)

Since I lasted posted I have reinstalled to OS with no luck. I have
been on the phone with some people at time warner cable who think that
it might be some firmware problem on there side. Could this truly be
the case? Another note, when I reinstallled the OS I did not reformat
the drive so there seem to still be empty folders left over from the
old install. Is this a problem?
