I wish to purchase good and services on the web with a 'disposable'
credit card number without revealing my true credit card number and
personal details. I feel more comfortable not having to rely on the
privacy assurances of the merchant i deal with. Are there a few
competing services that can help keep my credit card purchases private
and secure?

brian,

I can point you at "disposable" credit card numbers which cannot be
reused, but to the best of my knowledge, it is extremely difficult if
not impossible to hide your name and address.

Would you accept an answer detailing how to get a disposable number
that would still reveal your real name?

A third party intermediary who takes payment from my card and for a
fee gives me a disposable card number AND their billing info to give
to web merchants is what I am seeking. This preserves my anonymous
purchasing goal.

I recall seeing just such a service but misplaced their web
address.......

Hello

Is “Privatebuy” what you are looking for?

http://web.archive.org/web/20011107184346/http://www.privatebuy.com/

I believe they went out of business because the only way I was able to
access their website was through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

Thanks

PrivateBuy is exactly what i was looking for IF it was still in
operation-but they are out of business. Can anyone point me to an
operating company I can do business with???

Dear Brian,

Just a question.

If you are ordering goods or services,
they need to be delivered to you.

So, you won't be able to hide your identity
or your location.

But if you are looking for a short-term or
specific use credit card number, that I can
find for you.

Would that work for you?

Best wishes,

Hello there

This site offers links to solutions:

http://www.itic.org/digital_frontier/consumer/purchase.html

Regarding iprivacy, you can take a look at how the product works at:

http://www.iprivacy.com/products/works.html

The merchant doesn't get to see your card details, name or shipping
address, resolving the problem posted as a 'request for clarification'
on your question (posted by taxmama).

Zixcharge is available and is free of charge to consumers. Check out
their website at:

http://www.zixcharge.com/

Incogno is another option. Unfortunately, I was unable to access their
website at http://www.incogno.com. A brief description of what it does
(along with a host of other Internet privacy related items) can be
viewed at:

http://www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/privacy/900workshop/demoslist3.htm

I hope this helps. I'll try to gain access to the incogno website in
the near future and if I'm able to, I'll let you know more about their
product.

In the meantime, if you need this question clarifying, please click on
the appropriate link.

Best wishes

sim-ga

This is an interesting possibility which I was unaware of, but:

1) These are prepaid debit cards, not credit cards, and thus you must
pay for them upfront rather than receiving and paying together with
your credit card statement.

2) There are fees involved with their use which are do not occur with
credit cards.

3) The websites quoted were unclear about whether or not you retain
your right to dispute a product or service as with a normal credit
card.
