Hello brudenell-ga,

I located the winery that makes wine in lobster shaped bottles.

Would the name of the winery and the contact information suffice as an answer.

Thanks!

Hello brudenell-ga,

I located the winery that makes wine in lobster shaped bottles.

Chatham Winery
Route 28, The Cornfield,
Chatham, MA 02633
Phone: (508) 945-0300

“Located upstairs at the Cornfield, Chatham Winery offers tastings of
its unusual fruit and flower-based wines, such as cranberry mead, red
currant and belle of Georgia peach, an award-winning dessert wine.
Their popular Midnight Blue, a $9 blend of red grapes and blueberries
in a cobalt blue bottle, won a silver medal in an international wine
competition in Toronto. The Chatham blush comes in a bottle shaped
like a lobster. Owners Glenn and Susan Smith-Elion price their 30
wines in the $7 to $10 range.”

Getaway Guides Website
http://www.getawayguides.com/massachusetts/capecod/diversions.htm

I sent out a number of e-mails to glass bottle manufacturers and
unfortunately they do not make those wine bottles.

Demptos
We do not produce this bottle. Good luck with your search. You may
want to go to the internet and look up Vetri Bruni from Italy. They
seem to make these types of bottles.

Vitro Packaging
We do not manufacture any bottle in the shape of an actual lobster.
We offer a variety of different molds in our stock program, but they
are all in classic silhouettes.

Perhaps if you call the Chatham Winery they may be able to give you
more information. I did not pursue the Vetri Bruni from Italy lead as
I don't know if you wish to import the bottles.

Best Regards,
Bobbie7-ga

Thank you Bobbie7-ga for your efforts. I feel that we are getting
close. Let's wait a day or so to see if Chatham Winery responds to
your request. If they do not I will call them myself. Thank you very
much for your efforts so far!

Hi again,

I do not have the e-mail address of Chatham Winery, only the phone
number which I posted above. I sent out 3 e-mail inquires to 3
different bottle manufacturers and only 2 have responded. Perhaps you
should call the Chatham Winery as I don't live in the U.S.

Thank you

Hello Bobbie7-ga

Thank you for the quick reply.

I am not in the US either!

I'll call now...

And here is the result: Chatham Winery is no longer in business. The
phone call was answered by a congenial restaurant owner who now has
the number. He stated that the winery has been out of business for 3 -
4 years. He did know however about the lobster bottles. Unfortunately
he did not know where to find them today other than on eBay.

The search continues

Thanks for your assistance & interest in my question

Maybe if someone can track down the former Chatham Winery owners Glenn
and Susan Smith-Elion they could shed light as to the source of their
former supply of lobster bottles.

Hi Brudenell,

I located a manufacturer of custom made glass products.

"Glass Products
JAJA Group Gift and Household Division offers a full range of high
quality Glass products manufactured to your specifications."
http://www.jajagroup.com/GiftNHousehold/glass.htm

They do not sell 1 or 2 pieces. They will ship anywhere in the world.
To request a quote or more information about a specific product,
please fill out the following form. I wanted to ask for the
information myself but it would be better if you do so, as they ask
for product quantity and specifications.

Please let me know asI will continue my search for these lobster
shaped bottles.

Good afternoon Bludenell,

This is what I have for today.

In an article at the Packaging Digest website they mention that Anchor
Glass made the glass bottles with a handle for Kahlúa iced coffee
drink.

“Continuing the premium and unique appearance of the package, the
15.5-oz glass bottles on which the shrink-sleeve labels are applied
are custom-made to reinforce the coffee concept. "We figured that
every coffee cup ought to have a handle on it," says Balboni, "so we
designed a package with a handle. And then we used amber glass to tie
the package back to the coffee‹the look of the beverage." Supplied by
Anchor Glass, the bottles are similar to those used for Blue Luna Café
Latte”
http://www.packagingdigest.com/articles/200104/72.html

This is what it says at the Anchor Glass Container Corp Website:

“We have received numerous awards for bottle and package design.”
http://www.anchorglass.com/main.htm

I sent an e-mail inquiring for the bottles:
marketing@anchorglass.com

This is what Lissa McLaughlin responded.

“Thank you for your inquiry with Anchor Glass Container.
I am sorry - we do not make anything like that.
You may try the following wine distributor - Waterloo Container they
are located in Waterloo , NY
You can contact them at (315) 539-3922 - Roberta Parmalee.
Good luck with your project.
Regards,
Anchor Glass Container Corporation"

I suggest you cal Roberta Parmalee. I believe that we are getting
closer.

Good Afternoon Bobbie7

Just received the following reply from JAJA:

Thanks for your inquiry!

Re lobster shape glass bottle, if you can send me a drawing marked
with
specifications, details and also tell me the close port to you, I'll
be
able to quote you a price.

As you know that we are a custom manufacturer in overseas. You can get
a
big advantage on the price if the quantity is big. Since your quantity
is so small, all kinds of middle service fee, such as inland and ocean
freight, the custom broker fee, the customs bounded warehouse in and
out
fee, the harbor fee and customs processing fee,....etc averaged to
each
pc will be very high. If you don't worry about the cost, we'll be more
than happy to be a stable manufacturer for you. Please let me know
your
decision.

You can reach me at this address or at jun4813@bigplanet.com

Sincerely,
Jun Tang
JAJA Group, Inc.

As you can see they do not have such an item in stock but can
manufacture if the quantity makes sense.

I prefer to continue the search for an existing stock.

Thank you for your lead I will contact Roberta Parmalee

I will post later as soon as I am in touch

Attn Bobbie7

Just spoke to Roberta and she does not have such a bottle. She did
know of them however as they tried unsuccessfully to acquire the mold
a few years ago. The mold owners were private and a deal could not be
struck. She said a company known as Wheaton, that usually specialized
in pharmaceutical glass products, did make the original stock of
'lobster' bottles. There was a subsequent lawsuit over the bottles.
She then said that a company on the east coast of the US: Carr Lowery
may know of the 'lobster' bottle issue. I am trying to get a number
for Carr Lowery.

And this is the latest in the search...

Hope you are having better luck

We are close!!

My phone call ended up at The Glass Group who are purchasing a
division of Wheaton.

Wheaton Glass made the lobster bottle!

The individuals who would know the particulars were not available at
the time of my call.Their names: Product development- Bob O'Donnell
and a Bruce Pierce.

I am now trying to get the email addresses of those two men.

Good Evening Bobbie7

Thank you for your continued efforts.

I obtained some email addresses from the person who answered the 'The
Glass Group' telephone however my contacts to the Wheaton addresses
received were returned by 'system administrator'. I subsequently found
that Wheaton is owned by Alcan. By looking at the 'contact' addresses
given for Alcan's various divisions I see that everyone has an Alcan
address. I resent my requests to the two men using an Alcan.com
suffix. So far they have not been returned by 'system administrator'.
Should contact not be established by email I will reattempt by
telephone through Wheaton tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed!

Hello Brudenell,

Here is a handy tool to use to verify an e-mail address.
http://www.searchbug.com/peoplefinder/verifyemail.aspx

"This tool will check validity of E-Mail Address by communicating with
the Mail Server in a real time. Most Mail Servers are configured to
reject messages addressed to non-existing accounts. However, some
servers will simply ignore such messages and return no errors. That's
why sometimes you may get a 'Valid Account' response to a clearly
invalid e-mail address."

I suggest you enter the e-mail address of Bob O'Donnell and Bruce
Pierce with the Alcan suffix into this e-mail verifier.

I haven't received any new responses this afternoon to my e-mail
inquiries, but I'm sure we'll have good news tomorrow. (My fingers are
crossed)

Until then,

I just realized that you hvae already contacted Waterloo.

Clarification of Question by brudenell-ga on 06 Nov 2002 11:52 PST
Bobbie7

The emails worked! We have replies:

1)Yes, we did produce a Lobster Wine Bottle. However this item was a
private mold for Chattam Winery. The company and owner got into some
serious fraud problems, and as far as I know assets were tied up in
court
battles. It is my understanding that the tool is not available to
anyone
other than Chattam at this time. BOBOD

I went back with a subsequent request:

Thank you very much for the reply.

I have been searching everywhere for an existing supply of 'lobster'
bottles. I am assuming that it would be prohibitive to produce a new
mold
etc.

Do you or your colleagues in the glass world have any knowledge of a
source?

And this was Bob O'Donnell's reply:

2) It is my understanding that this is the only existing tool for a
Lobster
wine bottle. I have seen fish bottles, but no other Lobster. As to
prohibitive to produce a new mold, that is relative. I would estimate
a
cost of about $30,000 in development costs and tooling charges to
develop
and produce a tool. My initial guess on bottle costs would be about
$1.00
each in the 100,000 lot range.

So...

We found the supplier but no bottles.

I am replying to Bob asking if he has any idea where the bottles ended
up Ie. if there is unused stock sitting in a wharehouse somewhere
awaiting legal resolution.

The search continues.

Brudenell,

Waterloo answered the following:

"You can try Carr Lowery @ 732-323-8355 or a company called
Wheaton Glass. They maybe one and the same by now. One of them has the
lobster mould.I believe it is a private mould.
Mould costs for something unique like this would run you about
$65,000. The minimum run would be 4 days @ 5 loads per day.
Average 40,000 cases of 12 pack.
Feel free to call if you have any questions
Regards,(Roberta Parmelee)
Waterloo Container Co.

Well the prices are extremely elevated so I also hope there is a
leftover stock of bottles somewhere.

Bobbie7

A reply was received from Bob O'Donnell:

As far as I know all bottles were shipped to Chatham Winery on Cape
Cod. If
there are unused bottles there I have no idea. BOBOD

Now I feel the only avenues for success on the trail of the former
Chatham Winery stock/ assets etc. are 1) a search of court generated
auctions etc., sherriff sales, in and around Cape Cod. and 2)finding
the former owners Glenn and Susan Smith-Elion and asking them what
happened.

Now without violating Google Answer rules I wonder what the best way
to find #2

The only lobster wine bottle I could find was a 1970 Ezra Brooks Maine
Lobster Decanter. It is a collector's item and no longer being
manufactured. Marked on the bottom of the bottle is "HERITAGE CHINA
(C) 1970 SN-5 EZRA BROOKS MAINE SESQUICENTENNIAL 1820-1970". It was
only sold in Maine.

My search took me to this site, which lists one of the bottles for
sale at a price of $50.00. There are several pictures of the decanter
here, so you might want to take a look at this link to see if you
recognize the bottle.

Thanks everyone for the additional comments and especially afernald.ga
for the site address. Unfortunately the decanter shown is not the type
of bottle that I seek. The goal wine bottle looks like a wine bottle
and is able to hold 750ml of wine. I really need the name and contact
info of a manufacturer. All of your efforts are very much appreciated!
