My daughter recently gave up a baby for adoption. This is a open adoption so we're lucky & get to see her & know how she's doing. I would like to know if anyone knows where there are good support groups for birthmothers & grandparents online as there is nothing here locally. |

Greetings, Following is a list of sites offering bulletin boards, mailing lists, and chat rooms where you and your daughter can find friends and support. AdoptionForums.com is a very active web-based bulletin board. Registration is required, but it is free. They also provide a chat service. http://www.adoptionforums.com/ The Adoption Community at About.com offers chat rooms and forums: http://adoption.about.com/library/blunity.htm There are many adoption related mailing lists available here: http://www.adoptionlists.com/ In particular, you'll probably be interested in these two lists (quotes taken from http://www.adoptionlists.com/ ) Grandparents: "Support for grandparents whose grandchild has been adopted into another family." http://www.adoptionlists.com/index.php?action=lists&listname=grandparents&listnumber=33 Birthparents: "Support for both birthmothers and birthfathers." http://www.adoptionlists.com/index.php?action=lists&listname=birthparents&listnumber=15 In addtion, here are some sites relating to adoption which you may find useful: Adoption.com. Where Families Come Together. http://www.adoption.com/ Adoption.org http://www.adoption.org/ Adoptions.com: complete information for anyone touched by adoption. (This site also has some mailing lists--called discussion groups on their site.) http://www.adoptions.com/ Birthmother.com http://www.birthmother.com/ Google search terms used: birthmother grandparent online adoption support groups ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=birthmother+grandparent+online+adoption+support+groups&btnG=Google+Search I hope this helps, and best wishes. bikerman-ga |

Hello, Bikerman has given you some fine resources! It's unfortunate that there is nothing available offline in your area. I wanted to be sure that you have contact information for a group called Concerned United Birthparents, sometimes known informally as CUB. CONCERNED UNITED BIRTHPARENTS (CUB) What we offer: http://www.cubirthparents.org/page3.htm Contact: info@CUBirthparents.org Home Page: http://www.cubirthparents.org/ You may want to consider contacting CUB to inquire about options for support in your area, even if it's only an email or telephone buddy. Who knows, they may be looking for someone just like you to start a support group in your area! Groups such as CUB tend to have a very large network of supportive contacts. CUB's site does have a public bulletin board, but it tends to be used mostly by searchers. Warmest regards to you and your family. I commend you, your daughter, and the adoptive family for having the courage to safeguard this child's biological heritage. She will never have to struggle with the identity issues faced by so many adoptees :-) Best wishes, fsw |
