Question ID: 97629
I own an original Epson Color Stylus PRO inkjet printer and it has
served me well, but now has a single clogged nozzle. I'm confident I
could repair it if I could just get the case open without destroying
it. What is the trick for getting the case open?

This is the model I have:

Hello!

I set out in search of how to remove the case from your printer,
but I found something that might fix your problem without having
to take your printer apart--which would be a plus to me if it
works. I'm posting this as a clarification because it doesn't
answer your question exactly, but hopefully it will solve your
problem.

First you need to know how to cause your printer to run through
its cleaning cycle. The cleaning cycle is designed to fix/prevent
exactly this problem, but it doesn't always work. Here is a quote
from a website describing how to cause the Stylus Pro to execute a
cleaning cycle:

"Why am I getting horizontal lines through my printed text or
graphics?

"This phenomena is called banding and may be caused by a clogged
nozzle. Print the selftest page by pressing the Load/Eject button
while applying power to the printer. Check to see if white lines
appear through your text. If the white lines are present, perform
two cleaning cycles as described under the front cover of the
printer; (COLOR Cleaning)-Press the PAUSE button, then ALT and
Economy Condensed, or (BLACK Cleaning)-Press the PAUSE button,
then ALT and Load/Eject. If the ink cartridge is new and the
cleaning cycles did not correct the problem, print the default
settings (Press Economy/Condensed and power the printer on) to
ensure that "Autoline Feed" is off. If the "Autoline Feed" is
off, and the test print still shows missing dots, have the printer
sent in for repair. If the ink cartridge is old, and the cleaning
cycles did not correct the problem, print the default settings to
ensure that "Autoline Feed" is off. If the "Autoline Feed" is off,
replace the ink cartridge. You may have to perform a few cleaning
cycles after installing the new ink cartridge. Banding may also
occur if the user turns the printer off by a power bar. If this
is the case, the user may need to run up to 10 cleaning cycles to
correct the problem. If the condition persists and it is visible
in the demo page, the printer needs to be serviced. The
Troubleshooting Guide located in Chapter Six of the User's Manual
provides additional information."

If that works, great! But if it doesn't, there's still hope.
Check out the following page which describes how to run alcohol
through the ink cartridge. A bunch of people have had great
success with this method. Note that you may have to run through
the cleaning cycle 20 or more times.

There are also some helpful comments on that page. In particular,
you might want to read the one by Robert Dunn telling how to keep
from wasting so much ink during the process. Search the page for
the following string to quickly find his comment:

I have known about the multiple cleaning cycles for a long time, and
have used it sucessfully before, but I have run many many cleaning
cycles this time to no avail.

I will try the isopropyl alchohol methods and let you know.

I'd really like to get inside the thing, however, as it could use a
thorough cleaning. It looks like the top and bottom halves of the
case snap together with no obvious way to separate them. Usually there
is some way to release them for servicing.

Okay, I'll keep looking. I know a computer repair guy who might can
tell me; if I don't find anything by the time his business hours roll
around, I'll give him a call. He might even have one of them sitting
around that we can look at.

meganerd,

After some more searching, I found a couple of newsgroup postings
which (claim to) give the trick for getting the case apart. This
has apparently stumped quite a few people...I hate the way
manufacturers try to make their products irreparable to everyone
but their own technicians.

Here are the links to the complete threads:

And here are the relevant quotes from the articles:

"I have battled with this problem for weeks. The trick is the
following:
'''First remove all the screws you can reach and unlock the catches
with a
screw-driver or so in the back. So far so good.
Then you must lift up the operator panel with a sharp object (knife or
so)
and you can disconnect the flat-ribbon cables. This now allows you to
reach this last, otherwise inaccessible screw and you can lift the top
off."

the top

getting at
clips with a flat bladed screw driver."

similar tricks were used to prevent tampering. It might be worth

I was able to get the case apart with the help of the information
provided. I dissasembled cleaned and reassembed the print heads, and
unfortunately it worked exactly as it had before. I'll canibalize the
stepper motors and junk the rest. It was educational.

For anyone else who wants to get inside an Epson Stylus PRO, don't
peel the membrane off the control panel, just prize the whole panel
panel upward.
