I'm looking for a quote. I think it is in a poem by Herman Hesse and
I think it starts: And Siddhartha asked, "And what of love Master."
Near the end, it goes: let your love be like the water beween two
islands.... I need the full quote from the And what of love master to
the end. I need it for my wedding.

Thanks

Hello Donald,

Could the quote you're looking for be from "The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran"
Here is an excerpt from Chapter 3 - On Marriage

"And what of Marriage, Master?
And he answered saying:
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls."

I was not able to find the quote in the book Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.

Thanks

Dear Donald,

After doing more research and discussing this question with a fellow
researcher (this was also said on her wedding day), I’m positive that
the passage from the Prophet by Kahlil Gibran is the quote you’re
looking for.

Kahlil Gibran
The Prophet
Chapter 3 - On Marriage

“Then Almitra spoke again and said, And what of Marriage, Master?
And he answered saying:

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

The complete passage can be found at the above link. I didn’t copy it
completely for copyright reasons.

Search Criteria:

First I searched for Hermann Hesse and Siddhartha and I read through
the 12 chapters trying to locate the quote.

I finally realized that your quote sounded very familiar. Years ago I
read The Prophet and I just happened to have a copy of the book in the
house.

I hope you find this helpful and I wish you the best of luck on your
wedding day.

Best Regards,

This is very cool. I took a short nap after submitting my question,
decided to look one more place in my house, found the Prophet and said
oops and found what I was looking for. Had I not, I'd have really
needed your superb work, finding it despite misleading info. Great
work
