What types of sources should the forecast come from? Would forecasts
outside of the US government like journalists be considered a
legitimate answer? :)

The type of sources should include anything that is based upon the
(logical) forecasts.

Forecasts outside of the US government like journalists is accepted.
As long as there are evidences supporting it. Forecasts inside the US
are also helpful to me.

Clarifying : The state of nuclear weapons (in the world) in the year
2050.
So it's not only in US.
Answer
There is no answer at this time.

toohootz,

am not sure what you are looking for but felt that trying to forecast
(numbers) of Nuclear weapons is quite silly. Even though the nuclear
powers that be has declared to reduce their armaments by a certain
time frame, they are actually replacing their old stock with new
stocks (that are more powerful)... thats why they can safely declare
they have cleared more numbers than each other.

The numbers game is a sad game that the politicians play to try and
pull wool over the eyes of the general public. Despite what most of
the army people say, a nuclear weapon is never a defence equipment -
but as some "brilliant" military expert has often quipped - "offense
is the best form of defense".

What a sad state of affairs our world has come to.
