In a recent article, Forbes lists the four largest cosmetics companies
in the world by sales as L'Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and
Shiseido.

The six largest companies in 1999 -- according to what appears to be a
case study of Shiseido -- were L'Oréal Group, Unilever, Procter &
Gamble, Avon, Shiseido, and Lauder.

The 1997 Women's Wear Daily (WWD) International Beauty Report found
that the top five cosmetics companies in total beauty sales were:
L'Oreal Group, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Shiseido Company Ltd., and

So, in short, L'Oréal is consistently first, followed by Unilever and
