Hi jkq—

As you probably already know, many of the medical journals don’t allow
you to read the full text of articles online. However I have managed
to pull together some basic information as well as find you some
online journal articles. Below those I’ve listed some sources for
further information. Since you are at a university and I’ve provided
full bibliographies, I’m sure it will be no problem to find these
articles at your library.

Finally, do the searches that I’ve provided for you at the bottom of
the page. There were many more abstracts available online and if
you’re going to make a trip to the library, it would be well worth the
effort to go armed with more bibliographies.

Of course, the other option is to get the pay-per-view subscription to
the journals that I’ve cited –

Pay-per-view for all Royal College of Psychiatrists' journals -
includes: British Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Bulletin, British
Psychiatry On-Line, and Advances in Psychiatric Treatment
http://bjp.rcpsych.org/subscriptions/print.shtml

On-line only - Pay-per-view
US$8 per article / US$15 for 24 hour site access

The Merriam-Webster medical dictionary defines self-mutilation as
follows:

Main Entry: self-mu·ti·la·tion
Pronunciation: -"myüt-&-'lA-sh&n
Function: noun
: injury or disfigurement of oneself <self–mu·ti·la·tion associated
with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome>

Here is a concise overview of the disorder:
