<There were many important developments during the industrial
revolution which established an education system for the working
classes. The main impetus for education was that factory owners needed
their workers to have literacy and numerical skills.

The following chronology gives the major changes that took place:

Prior to the Industrial Revolution most education came from the
church.
1780’s - Sunday schools provided people with literacy and other basic
skills.
1798 – The first adult school is established to teach young women
working in lace and hosiery factories.
1839 – The state introduced grants to a new committee called the
Education Department.
1861 – A payments by results system is introduced.
1870 – Foster’s Elementary Education Act gave rise to elementary
education for every child and set up School Boards to organise
schools.
1876 – Sandon’s Act gave parents the responsibility of ensuring that
children between the ages of 5 and thirteen went to school.
1880 – Mundella’s Act made education compulsory for children between
the ages of 5 and 10.
1891 – The Free Education Act made education free.
