Any particular area? Europe in general?
For my part of the world (the Netherlands) prisons really didn't exist
in the middle ages. You were locked up until trial and afterwards
either executed, tortured, given a fine, put to work or let off the
hook. Prison sentences as we know them today didn't happen back then.
