"Personal hygiene was the slowest growing personal care market overall
from 1997 through 2001. Product innovation in the deodorant category
fueled growth in Europe, the world's largest market for personal
hygiene products, while increased affluence and urbanization in Asia
and South America created strong demand for personal hygiene products.
Once again, South America led the way in growth, increasing at a CAGR
of 8.19 percent to almost $2.7 billion in four years.
Growth in the North American bath and shower products segment will be
driven by the increasing popularity of liquid soaps and shower gels.
According to IRI, liquid soap unit sales increased 4.3 percent for the
year ended September 10, 2001. Overall, the category rose 7.7 percent
to $900 million in sales for the period. At the same time, bar soap
sales fell 4 percent to $1.4 billion."
