Hi,

I recently downloaded some software called "callwave" which is suposed
to alert you to 'phone calls while you're online. It turned out to be
only applicable in the US, and i'm in the UK. I uninstalled it as best
I could but I still get the following message popping up whenever I
start up my computer: ""We're sorry your callwave softwaree wont open
at this time.Please click the help button for instructions on how to
fix this problem."

I don't want callwave an wont to know how I can get rid of this
annoying message. I'm using windows 98. Please help!

Thanks,

Chris

Hello doobydoo,

The first thing I would do in this case is to re-install the program.
It sounds like you may have tried to manually remove the files, which
would leave behind the startup and registry entries. Since the file
'iamsetup.exe' may not be removed during the uninstall, it seems that
you may have left this behind, and the startup and registry entries
still point to the existing file. Callwave *detects* your internet
connection is still good (which it is). When you receive calls or your
computer starts up the program, it lacks the other needed files to
run, thus the error.

Note : Do a full reinstall first. This will make sure the uninstall
program that comes with it will remove all the entries made on your
computer. Once you install, follow these directions -

As per the Callwave website, here are the uninstall directions:

Full Uninstall Directions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) If CallWave is currently running on your PC, click on the Menu
button on the CallWave window and select Exit.

2) Click on Start in the lower left corner of your screen. Click on
Settings, then Control Panel. Double click on Add / Remove Programs.
Select CallWave Internet Answering Machine and click Remove.

3) Delete any saved iamsetup.exe files on your computer. (To find
iamsetup.exe files, click on Start in the lower left corner of your
screen, go to Find, then to Files Or Folders. In "Named" field, enter
iamsetup.exe and click Find Now. If you find any iamsetup.exe files,
right click on each file and delete it.

Excerpt of instructions taken from Callwave site:
http://www.callwave.com/members/help/default.asp?h=13

Should this procedure not work, please ask for clarification before
rating, and I will help you further until we can get rid of the
software.

To assist with this answer I searched Google for:
"uninstall callwave"
://www.google.com/search?q=uninstall+callwave

Thanks for the great question!
SgtCory

P.S.
If you are 100% sure you removed the program via the Control Panel,
then you can try just removing the instances of the file
'iamsetup.exe'. Start the removal with number 3 above.

Extra Info
The 'iam' in 'iamsetup' is short for Internet Answering Machine.

You will want to check 2 places first: Your startup menu and the Run
key.

If you look Start -> Programs -> StartUp, and the program appears
there, just right click and delete it.

The other option involves editing the registry, which I wouldn't
recommend unless you are very familiar with it or have very explicit
instructions.

In the registry, under HKey_CurrentUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Run
you will find additional programs that run upon startup. If you see
the offending program here, remove it. Once again, be VERY cautious
when modifying the registry.

Try going to your start menu, clicking run, and typing "msconfig" and
hit enter. Then you will have a nice little dialog box, which you
should click on the "startup" (or possibly its named "startup
programs") tab. This should list *every* program that tries to start
up on your computer, along with a check box. Just uncheck the one for
your callwave software, and it will stop trying to load at startup.
Note: this only works for windows 95/98/me, so you are in luck, but
those of us using 2000 or xp would have to try something different.

It is most likely in Start -> Programs -> StartUp. You can right-click
on the start button and "explore all users" to see if it is in
"c:\documents and settings\All users\start menu\programs\startup". It
could also just be in your userprofile "c:\documents and
settings\USERNAME\start menu\programs\startup".

If it isn't there then the next suggestion of where it might be is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Just delete the item under there that has to do with callwave.

If it isn't there, there is a slim chance they could still be putting
it in
c:\windows\windows.ini or c:\windows\system.ini.
Subject: USING MSCONFIG (Re: annoying dialogue box)
From: gregortroll-ga on 05 Nov 2002 14:37 PST

As has been mentioned, it might be in your startup group, within the
Programs group in the Start Menu. However, it probably isn't.

Rather than using the registry editor, of which many horror stories
abound (becuase novice, or over-eager experts deleted or changed
something that made Windows not work anymore) you can use a program
called MSCONFIG.EXE that comes with Windows 98 and XP. (Users of
Windows 95 or 2000: jump to bottom of this post, you can use MSCONFIG,
but you'll need to get it elsewhere. )

To use:
Start from a fresh boot. You will have to reboot when you are done.
Click Start, Run.
Type MSCONFIG then hit Enter or click OK.

The program shows several tabs. Each one is a different place where
windows stores startup items.

Begin with the far right tab, Startup. Look carefully through the
items, searching for a Startup Item that is likely to be the culprit.
Check the Command (which usually contains the place on the hard disk
that the item runs from). If the Command seems like it is likely to be
the culprit, clear the check box.

Next look at the WIN.INI tab. CLick the plus [+] next to the Windows
item. Look at the Load= and Run= entries. If they seem to be the
culprit, clear the checkbox. ONLY clear the checkbox if they seem very
likely.

If you've still not found a culprit, look at AUTOEXEC.BAT, and last
CONFIG.SYS. It's not likely to be there, but look anyway.

Only clear the checkbox if the item is very likely to be the culprit.
Do not clear anything else. Even if, especially if, you don't know
what it is.

Click APPLY, then CLOSE. Restart when asked.

If the annoying message does not return, you've done it. Now run
MSCONFIG again, look at the COMMAND again, then use that to find the
remainders of the annoying program and delete them. Rather, don't
delete them, move them to a new folder. That way if the next time your
reboot something goes wrong, you can put them back. If you're not sure
what I mean by all that, don't delete anything.

What To Do If You Mess Up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If, after clearing some check boxes and restarting, things seem to be
working badly, don't panic, run MSCONFIG again, then check those boxes
again. Apply. Close. Restart.
How to get MSCONFIG for Users of Windows 95 or Windows 2000
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I searched google for "msconfig download"

and this led me to

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm

where I found virus-free (McAfee 10/30/2002) versions of both
utilities.
