I am looking for a citation for the following quotations. I believe
it comes from an anthology, although I suppose it could appear
somewhere in an academic journal. At one time I thought the author
was Kate Burns, but now I have no idea. It is from an essay about the
work of performance artist Holly Hughes, which at one time I thought
was titled "Clit Tricks..." (Hughes has a solo show called "Clit
Notes.") Get ready for the porn sites when you type this in as a
query. The general academic subject would be performance
studies/performance of identity/queer theory. The two quotes are
interspersed with my own writing:
butch-femme subverts the naturalization of gender because a butch
lesbian redefines the performativity of masculinity and the femme
lesbian redefines the
performativity of femininity in a relationship that falls outside the
boundary, or law of heterosexuality (580). These subversions are
not limited to butch-femme lesbian gender, howeverthey are useful for
feminist projects that interrogate any and all gender construction, as
they highlight the performative quality of all genders and
sexualities (580). |
