I found this much. I e-mailed the principal author of the report
cited, but have received no reply.

According to the report "Facilities, Rounds, Interest, Participation"
(FRIP) prepared by the GOLF 20/20 organization, all PGA events on
broadcast (network) television in 2001 has a combined rating of 3.6
based on the A.C. Nielsen service figures. According to the same
report, the ESPN Soprt poll, a continuous poll of approximately 22,000
sports fans, reflecting a demographically weighted sample of the whole
US population, 40 per cent of the respondents identified themselves as
fans of professional golf (evidently all professional golf). In the
same poll, 32.5 percent of females 12 years old and older (12+)
identified themselves as fans of professional golf (again, evidently
all professional golf), while 8.1 per cent identified themselves as
"avid" fans.
That doesn't provide an exact figure, but there might not be one. Is
that enough?
