My daughter in Melbourne Australia is now calling friends in the US over fixed lines (bell company unknown but mostly in New Mexico). I know that the costs to us are only local connection fees, but want to make sure that international charges are not being incurred by the recipients of her calls. FOr example, sometimes the costs of international mobile calls are charged to both parties. CAN anyone help me on this? | |

If your daughter is using one of the common net 2 phone products (see this answer for a list [ https://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=91086 ] ), there is likely no hidden charges occuring to any party. These particular services pride themselves on being able to call any phone in the united states from any computer in the world for the same low fee (usually less than 4 cents a minute). This is due to a quirk in internet access pricing. No matter where in the world your internet data is headed, the costs are the same for the end user, thus you can save money on long distance by sending your voice thousands of miles to the us through the internet, where it is then sent over normal phone lines for a much lower charge than would be the case for a typical phone call of this nature. |
