How many private investigators (PIs) are there in the United States? I
am looking for the number of both PI agencies and self-employed
private investigators. I am trying to estimate the market for certain
tools PI's use, and therefore the number of agencies and self-employed
PIs is important.

"According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 55,000 private
investigators in the U.S. as of 1996. That figure is expected to
increase by 36% or more by the year 2005."
