I am a patient who was prescribed the antibiotic, Dynacin, for mild
acne,
and, as a result, now have been diagnosed with Systemic Lupus.
What information is there about product liability or malpractice
lawsuits and the drug Dynacin (also known as Minocin)which is
manufactured by the drug company Medicis? And, what documentation is
there that this drug can trigger Lupus in some people?

Hello infoseek~

I can find no evidence of a lawsuit concerning Dynacin (Minocyline)
and Lupus.

I can also find little evidence that Dynacin causes what can truly be
diagnosed as Lupus.

For example, one website, listing "Hypersensativities" related to the
drug, notes: "A transient LUPUS-LIKE syndrome has also been reported."
(Dynacin, dynacin.com, http://www.dynacin.com/PRESCRIBING/main.html )
This condition as "transient," meaning it doesn't last.

Here is another website that refers to the Lupus-like symptoms:
http://merck.praxis.md/bpm/bpmtables.asp?page=BPM01DE01&table=BPM01DE01T03

The information on these websites is typical of the side-effect
information found on Dynacin. This significant, but rare, side effect
is said to hit about 1 in 10:000 people.

One website seems to indicate that the side effects disappear slowly,
over time. (See http://www.docderm.com/patient_information/minocycline.htm
)
The same site notes that a condition that appears to be a form of
Lupus "unique to Minocycline" may appear after taking the pill for an
average of 3 years.

It may be wise to get a second-opinion, letting the doctor know that
you've taken Dynacin and for how long. It's possible your symptoms are
not Lupus, but something that mimics it and may disappear.

You may also want to check out this website, which gives information
on what things your prescribing doctor should have checked for before
perscribing Dynacin (Minocyline):
http://cp.gsm.com/direct/getobra.asp?caller=hink&cpnum=407

I have not posted this as an official answer, because it seems to fly
in the face of the information you seek.

I hope it may be helpful,
kriswrite
