Hi!

I've found a few examples for you. I've been working on the assumption
that you mean actual commercial theaters, not lecture halls or student
union facilities that are also used for movies (most colleges and
universities seem to have some sort of student film showings, either
in their own theaters or in lecture halls).

- The University of South Florida uses a local movie theater for
classes. They had to start doing this because of a combination of
tight budgets and an overflowing freshman class. You can find an
article from the St. Petersburg Times at
http://www.sptimes.com/2002/02/01/TampaBay/Coming_attractions_in.shtml
-- it describes the program and the reasons for it. The article says
that the University of Central Florida has also used movie theaters
for classrooms.

- Ohio University was at least planning to use a movie theater called
the Athena, which they bought to save it from being closed, to hold
classes in. (I haven't been able to ascertain that they actually are
using it that way, but at the time they began renovations, they were.)
You can read more about this theater in an article at
http://www.ohiou.edu/ohiotoday/spring01/departments/green/ and
http://www.ohiou.edu/outlook/1-16-02/athena.html .

- Chemeketa Community College in Oregon is using a movie theater at a
defunct outlet mall to hold classes. Read about this one at
http://portland.bizjournals.com/portland/stories/2002/04/29/story7.html
.

- As of winter 2001, Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania had plans to
remodel an existing movie theater and use it both as a commercial
cinema and as classroom space.
http://www.gettysburg.edu/administration/public_relations/magazine/2001/winter2001/majestic.html

(I also found an article about the Ryerson example you mentioned, at
http://ursu.uregina.ca/~carillon/sep18.97/news/news8.html -- in case
you need more information on that situation. According to that
article, Dalhousie University in Halifax considered using a movie
theater for classes, but then decided not to.)

I hope this is the sort of information you were looking for. I wish
there had been classes in a movie theater when I was in college -- it
sounds a lot more comfortable than the classrooms I was used to!

Search terms I used:

"movie theater" university classroom
"movie theatre" university classroom
"movie theater" college classroom
"movie theatre" college classroom

Not sure if this is along the lines of what you're seeking. But
Bowling Green State University (that's Bowling Green *Ohio*) used to
use one of their on-campus lecture halls as a student movie theatre
(paid admission to fairly current flicks). I say "used to" because I
think they have a dedicated movie theatre in their new student union.

VCP,

The most intensive dual use Movie Theater/Lecture Hall I've ever seen
was the University of Iceland Theater Complex in Reykjavik.
University lectures during the day and Cinema in the evening and on
the weekends. This is THE movie theater for the 230,000+ residents of
the city.

Page 28 of the below referenced document describes the theater.
