I need to trace some early reviews of Carlo Levi's "Christ Stopped at Eboli", an Italian book published in 1945, translated into English and published in New York by Farrar, Straus in 1947; the same translation was published by Cassell in London in 1948. I have seen some reviews from the New York Times, but need exact references (and if possible the text of the review or a contact in Great Britain that can provide it) for the following: - Carlo L. Ragghianti allegedly wrote about Carlo Levi's "Christ Stopped at Eboli" in "Portfolio, An Intercontinental Review" (which may or may not exist). - Alfred Kazin wrote about it in the New York Herald Tribune Book Review. - It was reviewed in New Republic (author of review unknown). - Lewis Gannett wrote about it in the New York Herald Tribune. - It was reviewed in the Saturday Review of Literature (author of review unknown). I do not have access to the relevant guide to periodical literature for years 1947 and 1948. If there are other reviews of this book I would also like to hear about them. |
