I'm looking for a tabulation of the US population by categories based on how they earn their money - for example if 288 million people, then 22 million are students earning a living from parents. 90 million retired earning their income through SS and retirement funds. 20 million in the government receiving money from the us taxpayer. 8 million farmers earning through selling their crops. Etc.I'm looking for data to support my premise that only about 10% of the population is receiving income from farming/fisheries, mining, manufacturing, transportation or intellectual activities which now accounts for about 60% of gDP | |

I have been thinking along similar lines for almost a decade but have found little data that is believable. Skill in lying seems to have increased. Most of us fit multiple catagories, so perhaps you should think half persons, 3/8 th persons ect, to avoid a total around 200%. 22 million students may be low, but your other tentative numbers are high, especially the 60% I suspect up to 90% of the GDP is overhead, fluff, and things that are harmful rather than helpful. We could have lots more leisure and a utopia, I suspect, if we could find a way to direct our energies to basic necessities. Neil |

The 1997 Economic Census provides data such as: Logging Industry had 83,203 employees with a total annual payroll of $2,011,9260,000. The population in 1997 was 267,743,595. There are many other categories. Try http://www.census.gov hlabadie-ga |

Just a thought re: "...for example if 288 million people, then 22 million are students earning a living from parents." EARNING a living? Holy cow! I am rendered speechless, which will flabbergast my kids. |
