Hello catlover

Why do we need Heroes?

It is in our nature to admire or respect those that represent the
qualities that we would like to hold within ourselves.

Heroes come in many forms and we admire those qualities within them
that enable them to perform the task that needs to be done. Overt
heroes like firemen run into burning buildings to save lives whilst we
cower outside impotently holding our hearts in our mouths wishing that
we possessed their courage.

There was a story once of a skydiving instructor that had jumped from
a plane in tandem with his pupil. When the parachute didn't open and
the reserve chute failed, the instructor knew that both he and his
pupil would be killed on impact. As they fell to the earth like a
stone, he turned around placing his pupil above him and when they hit
the ground, he died instantly - His pupil survived the impact. He gave
his own life up in a successful attempt to save a pupil he hardly
knew. How many of us could say that we would sacrifice our own life to
save a stranger?

But heroism is not solely related to acts of courage although there
are many different kinds of courage.

Heroes are the benchmarks against which we can measure ourselves
because whilst most of us are content to go through our lives and take
the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" as shakespeare said who
but heroes will "take up arms against the sea of troubles and by
opposing end them ?"

We need heroes in society to lead the way as examples of the best we
can be whether it be heroes that we look to because of their courage
like fireman and policemen or business men that started with a hundred
dollars and a dream and turned it into a million dollar business.

We all have dreams and aspirations about being better people, braver,
more successful, able to overcome adversity, etc but we also need to
know that the dreams are within our reach.

Therefore having heroes gives us the examples of people that have
achieved the goals for which we strive and therefore have led the way
to us knowing that it can be done and it isn't just a waste of our
time and effort trying.

At one end of the spectrum we have criminals showing us the worst that
mankind and society has to offer. Life is about balance so we need
those heroes to show us that mankind and society is also able to
produce examples of the best attributes that humankind has to offer.

Heroes are hope, and since without hope we are a lost cause we need
our heroes.

I hope this helps

You said you wanted it in the form of an essay but if you require web
links or additional information, I will be glad to add it at your
