I have been trying to find an engine on the internet that searches
scholarly publications for articles on specific topics which you can
designate via a subject or keyword category, but I can't find one.
All I can (sometimes) find are indeces to individual publications. I
know there will be nothing comprehensive, but isn't there SOMETHING
out there that has the ability to search more than one journal at a
time?

Have you tried Ingenta?

The Bibliography of the History of Art is a bibliographic database
that is specific to your topic. Howwever, it is not available for
free. For more information, go to
http://www.getty.edu/news/press/center/bhafact.html
Unfortunately, although the database is available through Dialog, it
does not come within the list of databases offered to indidividuals
paying by credit card. It might be in your best interest to try and
arrange access via the library of an academic institution, if that is
at all possible.
