According to a report on the "dot com bust" by Webmergers, Inc. (a
provider of analysis, data and advisory services regarding mergers and
acquisitions in the high-technology sector), 3,892 "dot com" companies
were acquired by other companies, while 962 companies were shut down
or went bankrupt.
"Three years after the peak of the dot com frenzy, nearly 5,000
Internet companies have either been acquired or shut down in a massive
sector consolidation... At least 4,854 Internet companies have either
been acquired or have shut down in the three years since the dot com
investment boom peaked in Q1 of 2000. Since then, buyers have spent
$200 billion to acquire 3,892 Internet properties. During the same
three-year period, at least 962 substantial Internet companies have
shut down or declared bankruptcy."
