The closest I could find is: Artist Cowboy Junkies Album Whites off Earth Now!! Song Shining Moon "Don't the moon look pretty shining down through the trees..." http://www.reallyrics.com/lyrics/C002700010001.asp. I think this video has someone standing on a country lane. LR |

I have a copy of the published sheet music of Don't the Moon Look Pretty (On a Country Road). It is definitely by Stuff Smith but he himself did not record it. Therefore Smith's song may have been recorded by someone else, in whicxh case I would be grateful to know by whom. Anthony at http://www.abar.net |

Here are the lyrics; music & lyric by Leroy (Stuff) Smith publ. BMI 1940. Actually violinist Smith did record the music, but not the lyric, doodling at the piano privately in the 1960s. Is this the song you remember? Moons may come, Moons may go, But here's one thing I'll always know: Don't the moon look pretty on a country road, He's so big, so yellow 'n bright; Oh, the moon looks peretty on a country road, Gee, I'm glad we're with him tonight. Can't you see he's tellin' you I love you so, And of course, you know that he's right: He's a wise old fellow to the world below: Don't the moon look pretty tonight. You can have a lillion stars that shine above us, There are more than I could ever get to know; But give me the country who's learnt to love us, 'Cause he'll follow us most ev'ry place we go. Don't the moon look pretty on a country road, He's so fine, so mellow 'n bright; Tho' he's way up high, he's such a grand old guy: Don't the moon look pretty tonight. (repeat) |

A great big THANK YOU. Yes this is the one and I may have found a cd with it on It is a Virginia Tradetions: Western Piedmont Blues Album but the artist is Clayton Horsley and if like you say it came out in 1940 I was only 10 years old and probably didn;t even care who wrote, published or sang it. Just thought it beautiful and a drive in the country recently with a big ol moon glowing broughtit to mind. Thanks a million for the great help. I was on computer till 1 am last night searching on all kinds of music sites.THANK YOU |
