I am trying to install windows 98 on a IBM Thinkpad 760 XD. The
problem is I have to have the floppy drive in to boot the system and
since the cdrom is not in there it will not install the cdrom drivers
so when I swap the drives I can't install win98 from the cd because
cdrom is not being recognized. What am I not doing right?

Hi. Let's make your computer boot from the hard drive, with cdrom
support.

1)please visit http://dos.li5.org/ and download win98.exe.
2)Run win98.exe and follow the instructions to make a bootable floppy
disk.
3)boot the laptop from the floppy disk. You should end up at a DOS
prompt that looks like:
a:\>
4)type in c: and press enter.
5)if you get "invalid drive specification" then se the section at the
end of this answer.
6) if you get a C: prompt, type in DIR and press enter. If you get
"file not found" then see the end of the message. If you get any sort
of listing, even if it is an empty directory with 2 sib directories (.
and ..) then proceed to step 7.
7)type in A: and press enter.
8)type in sys C: and press enter
9)when that is complete, type in the following commands and press
enter after each one.
copy autoexec.bat c:
copy cd*.sys c:
copy config.sys c:
copy mscdex.exe c:
copy mtmcdai.sys c:
10)shut down the computer, and replace the floppy drive with the cdrom
drive. reboot, and when you end up at a C:\> prompt, you should be
able to access the cdrom drive. Usually the drivers we loaded will
make it the R: drive, but you should get a message during boot up
telling you what drive letter it is.
11)type in R: and press enter (replace R: with the proper letter if
you got a different letter for your cdrom drive)
12)type in setup and press enter.
----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------
If you got the "invalid drive specification error" we need to
partition and format your hard drive. At the A:\> prompt type in the
following commands:
fdisk then press enter.
If you are asked about large disk support, choose yes.
At the menu, select 4 for display partition info. you should see no
partitions defined.
press escape to get back to the menu.
choose 1 for create partition.
choose 1 for create primary dis partition.
indicate that you want to you all of the drive, when you're asked.
answer yes if asked to confirm anything.
when it is finished, you should be back at the menu. use escape to
exit.
reboot the computer.
when you get to the A: prompt, type in:
format c: /s
and press enter. answer yes to confirm it. When it asks for a volume
label, just press enter. when you're back at the A: prompt, reboot
again and continue with the steps above.

I hope this helps. Please request a clarification if you have any
difficulties.

The easiest way to get the drivers you need will be from IBM.
A list of all the drivers that they have available.

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-3PGTDY.html?lang=en_US&page=brand&brand=IBM+ThinkPad&family=IBM+ThinkPad%7CThinkPad+760XD&machineType=IBM+ThinkPad%7CThinkPad+760XD%7C9546&doctype=Downloadable+files&subtype=All&up=unknownuser1004106089

You might need to manually assemble the URL into one long site in your
browser. I don't know if you'll be able to just click on it when you
read this.

The page I've linked to has a chart and a bunch of categories. You
choose the category of drivers you need, then download the file for
Windows 98 for your model. Most of them use the same file for all of
the 760 models, so there is one link in the first column.

I hope this was of help to you.

This is not quite an answer, but have you tried altering the BIOS to
change the boot drive from the A: drive to the CDROM?

How about creating a directory on the HD and then copy all of the
files from the win98\ directory that is on the CD. Then from the DOS
prompt, start the setup from that directoty on the HD.

The problem with creating a folder to copy the CD to, is booting from
a floppy and having CDrom access. When the floppyis in, the CDROM
device drivers won't detect and install.

Two years later and I've been struggling with the same problem. There
is a way to do a clean install of windows 98 by copying it to the hard
drive. Then you boot off your floppy rescue disk and install from
files on the hard drive. No flopy required. See
http://www.dansdata.com/sbs30.htm

Did you ever clarify the driver issue? I've been downloading drivers
in hopeless numbers from the IBM site. The Mwave drivers seem to be
critical but I still don't have everything running. Did you ever
figure everything out.
