Peterch --

You may want to split this question in two. The first part is pretty
easy to answer but I doubt that anyone has a rollup of businesses by
size worldwide. Researchers tend not to answer questions when they
can only provide part of what's requested.

Hi! The data on the US side is possible but for those outside the US
will be tough. The reason for this is that the possibility of
different census dates in other countries which will make for a pretty
murky data. Furthermore, in some countries, such data may not be
published over the Internet. Would US figures do just fine? You may
adjust the price to reflect the changes. Just let me know. :)

US businesses would be fine for 1/2 off the total price.

Hi! The most reliable dat I could find only has numbers up to those
companies with 10000+ employees. Would this qualify as a legitimate
answer? :)

Yes 10,000+ as the upper bound is a valid answer.

Hi! Thanks for the question and for accepting my answer.

I found the following data from the US Census. The latest data
published by the government was for 1999.

					Total Firms

10,000 or more employees 936
5,000-9,999 employees 871
1,000-4,999 employees 6,698
Less than 1000 employees 5,599,238

The data is in Microsoft Excel format. I will post a link here so that
you could verify my numbers.

“Number of Firms, Number of Establishments, Employment, and Annual
Payroll by Employment” (US Census: 1999)
http://www.census.gov/csd/susb/uslrg99.xls

If you want to view data in a number of ways according to size of
enterprise, the following page would be of help.

Sorry I tried to arrange the numbers buy they still got mixed up in
HTML. I will try to fix them up.

Size of Enterprise Number of firms

10,000 or more employees = 936 firms
5,000-9,999 employees = 871 firms
1,000-4,999 employees = 6,698 firms
Less than 1000 employees = 5,599,238 firms

Thanks.

My question for US businesses was answered. I was hoping for more
recent data but I can't blame the researcher for that!
