My vehicle recently was covered by a "silent or hidden warrantee" that
only became known to me through continued pressure on the dealer about
an obvious deficiency. The problem was rectified free of charge. Where
can I find examples and a listing of current unadvertised warrantees?

Good evening Brudenell,

My search returned the following results for places to find examples
and listings of unadvertised warranties:

The Center for Auto Safety

The Center for Auto Safety (CAS) provides information on common
problems and advice on how to resolve them for most models on the

“This information comes in consumer information packages by make and
model which are designed to empower consumers to take on the most
resistant manufacturers and get vehicles fixed for free or replaced.”

You may search online for the make and model of your car here:

A good place to get information about hidden car warranties is from

“Few car owners know secret car warranties exist. Carmakers are
reluctant to make these free repair programs public because they feel
it would weaken confidence in their product and increase their legal
liability. Most motorists who get compensated for repairs to blown
engines and burnt transmissions or paint that has turned chalky white
or peeled away, are the ones who read Lemon-Aid each year, produce
automaker service bulletins, and yell the loudest.”

A comprehensive explanation of hidden warranties and a number of
examples can be found here:

Lemon-aid Car Guides:

It's the only publication that lists hundreds of secret warranties and
service tips now in effect for 1987-2002 cars and minivans. Lemon-Aid
will tell you exactly what may go wrong today or tomorrow with your
present vehicle or the one you may purchase.

You may purchase Lemon-aid Car Guides at Amazon

Another good resource is the Recall Notice and Technical Service
Bulletin Titles 1982-2003 provided by Alldata. You may search for a
recall notice or TSB title for your vehicle here:

Technical Service Bulletins Database

The Technical Service Bulletins Search Engine will allow searches of
summaries of the Manufacturers' Technical Service Bulletins by single
year, make and model. An optional item of Vehicle Component may be
selected to help narrow the focus of the search.

Defects Investigation Database

The Investigations Search Engine will allow searches of current and
past NHTSA Investigations of vehicles, tires and equipment opened
since 1972, by single year, make or model.

Consumer Complaints
The Consumer Complaints Search Engine will allow searches of consumer
complaints regarding safety related motor vehicle and motor vehicle
equipment by make, model and year.
