I have contacted a historical society that might have such pictures or
know where the pictures can be found. I will follow up on my contact
tomorrow, and let you know what they tell me.

In the meantime, I should ask you: Would it be a sufficient answer to
point you to a book that contains these pictures, or a place in the
East Moriches area that has these pictures in their files? Also,
about how many pictures would be sufficient?

we live at the end of bay ave on the bay just north of the moriches
inlet. prior to the 1938 hurricane there were hotels on the property.
we are looking for 5 to 6 photographs or pictures. also if the
newspaper at the time the moriches tribune had any pictures. just
telling us where to find them is not sufficient. hopefully there is
some web based information or direct library information a normal book
picture may not work

The people at the historical society appear to be out of the office
today.

However, I have found out about a book that contains old photographs
of the following hotels:

Watchogue Hotel
Ocean House (where the Moriches Bay Memorial Park is now located)
Ketcham Hotel
Tuthill Point House (at end of Paquatuck Avenue)
Hotel Beach View (west side of Atlantic Avenue)

My understanding is that the Ketcham Hotel is not in the area you're
interested in. The Tuthill Point House and the Ocean House were close
to that area (just east and west of it, respectively). If the
Watchogue Hotel was on the current Watchogue Avenue, it would be not
be in the correct area. The Beach View Hotel was a little closer,
though apparently still a few blocks east of the area you described.

It is possible that this book also contains other pictures of hotels,
but that they are not identified as hotels, but as "Houses".

Would information about this book be a sufficient answer? I could
include information about three places where it would be available,
and in particular about the historical society that should have
additional photographs if anyone would.

I apologize, I should have checked to see whether you had submitted a
clarification. It sounds like the book might be insufficient for your
needs. If so, I'll try to contact the historical society again
tomorrow.

The authors of a book on the Moriches Bay area -- who are probably the
leading experts on the area's history -- have sent me three
photographs scanned from that book of "The House by the Sea", which
served as a hotel, and was later the "Union Settlement House". It was
located between Bay Avenue and the Terrell River. The photographs
show three different views of the building, along with some of the
surrounding land, and have a small amount of explanatory text.

I could post those pictures on the Internet (the authors have given me
permission to do this), and provide a link to the pictures and
information on the book from which the pictures came.

Would that be a sufficient answer?

if the book contains pictures of the hotels or houses on our property
then it would be but not if it contains pictures of adjacent
properties

Since you have indicated that you live at "the end of bay ave on the
bay"; I have contacted the authors of the book to confirm that the
hotel was located there. I assume that it was, since it was called
the "House by the Sea", but I figured it couldn't hurt to
double-check.

I do not know if the authors are at home or away for the holidays, so
it is possible that I will not hear back right away. If I get
confirmation that the hotel was at that location, I will go ahead and
answer the question; if not, I'll let you know.

Incidentally, this is not a request for question clarification, but I
thought that it should go here rather than in the comment section,
since it pertains to the previous discussion.

Here is the description I've received about the location of the
property in these photographs:

"The shot of the back of the house with the 2 horses is looking south
toward Moriches Bay. Faintly in the background a couple of sailboats
are barely visible. West of the house is Terrell's River and east of
the house is the end of Bay Ave., East Moriches. ... Today there are
two houses on the site, both looking out on the bay of course. I
believe there are separate driveways going to both from Bay Av. The
road actually goes another 75 ft or so ending up in a unkempt marina."
[Note: There is also a shot of the front of the house and some of the
surrounding property.]

Does this sound like the location of your property? If so, I could
post an answer.

I figured I should check with you again about my proposed answer. My
previous request for clarification came during the holidays, and you
might have missed it. Does my proposed answer sound good to you?
