Dear Jaybee3:
I sent an email of your question to my cousin who lives and works in
the city transportation office in Melbourne and has lived in the
States as well. After surveying his mates in the office, he sent me
the following reply:
"I've had a word with a few people in the office, but it seems that
most candy-type snacks are generally available here. Having wracked
my own brain, I can only offer the following suggestions:
Tootsie Rolls -- I haven't ever seen Tootsie Rolls here, but I think
Aussies might like them for a couple of reasons: First, the name
"Tootsie Roll" is unusual and might generate a bit of laughter, or at
least a bit of curiosity. Second, it is unlike any other candies
(lollies) available here.
Salt Water Taffy -- as you suggested is a treat with which Aussies are
generally unfamiliar. Toffies are very popular, but taffy is unhear
of. Perhaps the novelty will generate a bit of interest.
Hershey's Kisses -- The Hershey company tried unsuccessfully many
years ago to break into the chocolate market here, as it is flooded
with locally-produced chocolates (Cadbury's, etc.) Other American
chocolatiers have had the same experience. However, Hershey's Kisses
are somewhat known amongst Australians and could be a cute, attractive
product to pique their interest.
All three of the above suggestions would, in my view, satisfy the
questioner's query.
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
Joe"
Although you asked for an American product that is well known in
Australia but unavailable there,it appears that no product exists that
meets you complete criterea. As a frequent traveler to Japan, it is
customary to bring gifts for your customers and acquaintences. I
frequently brought craft items from my local area but your budget
would not stand that type of expense. Since many trade show booths
have candy bowls, the idea of Tootsie Rolls and Hershey Kisses would
seem to be both inexpensive, interesting, and satifying. Although
salt water taffy is a great treat, it has nothing to do with salt
water and may be confusing to the show attendees.
You can obtain the suggested treats at your local grocery store or
from an online purveyor such as
http://www.candydirect.com/html/eng/40507-AA.html or
http://www.candydirect.com/html/eng/40520-AA.html Information about
Tootsie Rolls is available from http://www.tootsie.com/ and Hershey
Kisses at http://www.hersheys.com/products/kisses.shtml
While I relied on my cousin's report to me, I also searched google
under "aussie treats"
