hi there~

as a child i remember having bought one of these books and although i
couldnt remember the name right away, a search did bring it up: peter
danielson's children of the lion books. there are quite a few of
these books out there and with so many published, there must be
someone out there whos read them.

not too many reviews out there (ive looked at 3-4 random titles at
amazon - no comments) but i did find this one review on usenet:

Are we limiting ourselves to *good* novels, or are the bad ones fair
game as well?

I've found that I have a strange taste for bad historical novels. For
those of you who agree with me, try Peter Danielson's Children of the Lion
series. I think it's up to book XVI now, though I may have missed some recent
ones (they tend to come out 2-4 a year or so...). Basically, these are bad
romance/adventure novels set in biblical times using biblical figures
and random imaginary characters. Now, it's not that Mr. Danielson doesn't
do his research, I think he does, but he's has no difficulty taking liberties
with the historical and mythological characters/events/places etc. Also,
his plots and characters are regularly recycled. It's amazing how the same
characters with different names crop up in every book. It's even more amazing how
the good guys in one book always mange to become the bad guys in the next
and then revert back again in the third!!! I Love It!!

Anyway, the books aren't good, but they're often fun...

yours truly,
Ceejl

so, the $2 that im putting up is for your personal quick judgement of
this book. please only reply if you have actually read one of his
books.

im not looking for anything too deep. just something like "yeah, it
was mildly fun" or "braindead stuff" or "forget about it, badly
written" or "trashy", etc.

im going to pretty much use your review to see whether or not i should
try to track down a $2 copy of a couple of the books or not.

thanks!

positive reviews are of course welcomed. i didnt want to necessarily
_expect_ a bad review! as i said, there must be something to be said
if he keeps publishing so many books.

anyway...

I'll leave your interesting question open for a Researcher who is more
enthusiastic about Peter Danielson, but here's my .00 cents' worth:

About fifteen years ago, in Sunday School, I read excerpts from two of
the books from the "Children of the Lion" series to a group of
elementary school-aged children. While the children enjoyed the
stories, I was not particularly impressed, even though I love classic
children's literature (I must have re-read C.S. Lewis's "Narnia"
series at least twenty times.) Danielson's many historical
inaccuracies didn't bother me particularly, but the writing style
seemed rather stiff and trite to me.

If you are interested in a lovely piece of juvenile literature with a
Biblical theme, I highly recommend "Many Waters," by Madeleine
L'Engle. This lady has never written a book that is less than
excellent, but "Many Waters," which is set in the times before Noah's
Ark and the Great Flood, is superb. It's a remarkable book which both
children and imaginative adults can enjoy.
