I drove my mother crazy with this 78 when I was little, in the early 50's. It was a small (8"?) 78 RPM record made of green vinyl, with an orange label, and it was called "The Weez Wump." I am certain of the spelling. I have no idea what was on the other side. The story line was that it's time for Baby Elephant to go to sleep, but she can't until her mother sings her favorite lullaby--"Please, Mommy--you know which one!" (recalled here in fragments): A strange little bird is the Weez Wump It ends where it ought to begin It takes daily baths in a dewdrop And sleeps on the head of a pin The Weez Wump is nice but it's lazy It won't build a nest of its own It (hides from the sun 'neath a daisy?) And cries when you leave it alone Its wings are too curly to fly with So it floats on a leaf in the breeze ... ... It ended with: Sleepy Weez Quiet please! "And Baby Elephant is fast asleep." (Now, isn't that a fine testament to the wisdom of encouraging children to learn things by heart when they're young?) Something, uh, happened to this record, probably within my first decade of life, and I never heard it again. Now I would love to find a recording of this if it is in existence and send it to my aged mother just for fun. I might even tell her at last that I thought it was obnoxious too, but I kept playing it over and over again partly because her reaction to it was so interesting. I've already done the obvious searches, so now I wonder what adept Googlists can do. Somebody actually wrote this thing and made up a tune for it, somebody voiced it, somebody recorded and distributed it. Somebody got paid for it, and somebody (probably not my mother) paid for me to have a copy of it. Where can I find it now? | |

If I don't have an extra copy of the record or records you seek, I can make a CD or cassette tape recording. Thanks, bobbie7, you have really gone above and beyond for this one. I didn't get back to this in time to make the eBay cutoff, but I will look for the resposting. Your answer is a winner. Here's a little extra for that. Apteryx |
