Hi all. Having been reading and posting here for about a month now
I've started to get curious. It is quite obvious that most researchers
are based in the US. I've also noticed a few in the UK, and I think at
least one in Australia. So I'm wondering, what is the geographical
breakdown of the researchers. And as a supplement, are any based in
countries where English is not the first language. I'm not sure if
anyone can answer this as I'm sure researchers don't get together for
a Christmas party or an annual staff day ;) but I'll accept any
educated guesses based on what any of you have noticed.

Greetings, risso!

Google Answers claims more than 500 Researchers. I am unable to give
you percentages of Researchers per country. However, to the best of my
ability, based on the Editors' statements, and information from the
Researchers themselves, here is your list:

Argentina
Australia
Austria
Barbados
Belgium
Brazil

Canada
- British Columbia
- Manitoba
- Nova Scotia
- Ontario
- Quebec
- Saskatchewan

Chile
China
Colombia
Cyprus
Czechoslovakia
England
Germany
Hungary
India
Ireland, Northern
Ireland, Republic of
Israel
Italy
Japan
Lebanon
Malaysia
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Philippines
Poland
Romania
Russia
Scotland
Singapore
South Africa
Spain
Switzerland
Tanzania
Turkey

United States
- Alabama
- Alaska
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- California
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Idaho
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Missouri
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- South Dakota
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Utah
- Virginia
- Washington, DC
- Wisconsin

I count at least 38 Countries and at least 35 U.S. States plus the
Federal District of Columbia (Washington, DC).

English is the primary language:

Australia
Canada - all provinces except Quebec, which is both French and English
England
New Zealand
Scotland
United States

As you can see, since so many countries have a primary language other
than English, it is a real credit to the Researchers from those
countries that they are able to do such an excellent job of Answering
in English.

Furthermore, when primarily English-speaking Researchers need
translation assistance, or need phone calls to be made in the
appropriate language in another country, the Researchers whose primary
language is not English frequently help out, just as English speaking
Researchers will assist them if requested.

What a lovely synergy is created by the variety of countries and
cultures represented in the Google Answers Researchers' Community!

I need to make a correction. Czechoslovakia has been split into the
Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. The Researcher Community
includes a Researcher from the Czech Republic (or Czechia).

My apologies for the incorrect country name.

We need to add the Canadian province of Alberta to the list.

I'm impressed! There is a much greater diversity than I had expected.
I'm also surprised that there are so many based in non-english
speaking countries (although I wouldn't count Ireland as being one of
these!. I'm sure that I have read answers from them, but have never
noticed that they have learnt rather than grew up with English.
A quick and comprehensive answer. Well done.

Hello Rissos!

You wrote: "I'm sure researchers don't get together for a Christmas
party or an annual staff day ;)"

Nope, no Christmas party. No annual staff day, either, since we're
only *just* approaching our one year anniversary!

BUT! We *are* having a barbecue in my hometown over the Fourth of
July weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing many of my partners in
Answers face to face.

Plans are being made in the Researcher Forum. Any Researcher not
already registered there, please do come over and join us!
