Question ID: 183232
Is it possible to register a domain name and buy site hosting
anonymously? i.e if anyone does a whois search no-one knows who owns
and registered the site?

The reason I am asking is that I wish to set up a website that I know
will be very unpopular and controversial. It won't be illegal or
pornographic or racial etc. I would not want people doing a whois
search and making threats at me or sending emails.

If the answer is yes, please provide me with reliable and cheap
hosting and domain name providers.

Or, if this is not possible, then once I buy a domain name and change
the address details, can someone still find out address details even
though i changed it?

Hello pinkhippo,

Yes, it is possible to register a domain name and buy site hosting
anonymously. Usually site hosting is anonymous, because the hosting
provider will not give out your personal information to anyone.
Registering a domain name is another matter though, but it can be
done!

There is one service that I can recommend that will do this but their
disclaimer is: "But don't even think about using a private
registration to transmit Spam, violate the law or engage in morally
objectionable activities."

Morally Objectionable Activities
• Child pornographic
• Harmful to minors
• Defamatory
• Abusive
• Threatening
• Harassing
• Tortious
• Obscene
• Racially, ethnically, or otherwise objectionable; or
• Involve hate crimes or terrorism

If you are not excluded from the above, I believe that this is the
best (legal) solution to your problem.

Take a look at what the difference in a WHOIS listing looks like if
you use this service:
https://www.domainsbyproxy.com/popup/whoisexample.aspx?isc=&se=%2B&from_app=&mscssid=&pl_id=2562&prog_id=hummer

You also have the option of actually receiving your mail and emails
(they would be forwarded to you in private if you decide you want
them).

To get a domain name with the above service, click here:
http://www.hummingbirdhosting.com/ and click on Domains. Then click on
Private Registration. The fee is $12.50 (for the domain) + $9 for
private registration. Best of all, you still completely own this
domain and retain all legal rights to sell and transfer the domain. If
you list fake registration and ran into problems with your domain,
your could the ability to transfer it to another hosting provider.
With this service this cannot happen.

Hummingbirdhosting is one of the many providers that offers this
"Domains by Proxy Private Registrations" service. I recommended it
through them because I know they are a good hosting provider. Read
about the legal issues here:
http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/LegalAgreement.aspx?prog_id=hummer
It is also important to read this:
http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/GetDBP.aspx?prog_id=hummer

Some other registrars which offer the Domain by Proxy service:
http://www.godaddy.com/
http://www.luckyregister.com/domain-name-search/privateregistration.htm
http://www.qsdnet.com/privatereg_nol.html

I hope this was the type of answer you were looking for. If you need
any clarifications or have any questions, please let me know and I
will do my best to further assist you.

All you need is private registration which keeps it anonymous to
public, pretty inexpensive to do

try http://www.eadomains.com

You may want to be careful about Registering Domain Name anonymously as it is
virtual property you are buying and could be worth allot of dollars
should your site work out.

At http://www.haloweb.co.za we recomend clients who want to register
anonymously to rather use services such as registerfly.com which has a
dns protect service for I think 1 $ a year, basically they hide all
your details in dns searches and replace it with thier own details
however behind the scenes the domain is still fully registered to your
name and you have full control over it.

How would I register a domain name so that the nameservers are hidden
in the WHOIS? I've seen this done before, where I can't even see the
WHOIS for certain domain names.

Thanks!
