Question ID: 191568
I am looking for a map of Hutterite colonies in the Canadian provinces
of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Maps can be seperate but must
include all colonies in all three provinces. I did have one bookmarked
with dated 1992 but lost the bookmark... this map had all three
provinces listed and was dated 1992.

Map should be dated 1985 or later. Maps also need to be to scale so
distance in km or miles can be measured. For example, this map is from
Saskatchewan, but has no scale:

I am making a trip to the library tomorrow and if there is no answer
yet the question might be expired, but as long as it is open I will
gladly pay.

Pricing is $5.00 but a good tip ($10 or higher) will be provided for a
great answer. Partial answers or answers not meeting above criteria
will not be accepted. Please don't spend too much time searching for
an answer... would love to have the answer ASAP so please do not
attempt to solve for hours (would rather have other researchers get a
chance too).

My friend said to direct question to certain researchers but am going
to leave it open to all and see what happens.

By the way, if you run across any data on the distance between parent
and child colonies for all the colonies in Canada, I will post a
second question with price to reflect value of the data to me. Please
post a comment if you find such information. No need to do any
searching though on this though, just if you run into it.

Hi Waldner-ga,

Here are three maps. The Hutterite colonies are marked with squares.
Distance in km can be measured. The scale is at the bottom of the map.

Saskatchewan – click on map to view large image

Manitoba– click on map to view large image

Alberta – click on map to view large image

Do the above maps fulfill your requirements?

Thanks

Hi bobbie7,

These would meet my requirements, but they are Mennonite colonies and
I am looking for Hutterite colonies. I really wish you could find me
maps like this, only for Hutterite colonies. Hutterite colonies will
be a bit harder I guess because there is less information about them
available online.

Since posting the question I have just tracked down a book "The
History of the Hutterites" by John Hofer and it has a fold out map
dated 1996 of the Manitoba colonies, so all I need at this point are
Saskatchewan and Alberta colonies for a complete answer. I am not
going to be able to post again until the morning but will check on the
progress then. I know there is at least one map available online, I
had it bookmarked last October but have since formatted my computer.

Thanks for the effort so far!

Hi waldner,
The closest I found is a scaled map of all ethnic settlements
(including Hutterites) in Saskatchewan. Would you want something like
that?

Hello rainbow,

I would be happy with that but also really need to have an Alberta one
too. Would really like the map with all three one one page but I guess
it has disappeared from the Internet.

If you can find a map for Alberta too, please submit your answer! I do
have one of Alberta and it is to scale, but it is a photocopy and the
scale is gone. If nobody else submits an answer, I will accept yours
for the list price, but would still prefer both Sask and Alberta.

Please post the map as an answer at 2:30 Central Time if nobody finds
a map of Alberta. I trust that it is 1985 or sooner and that it
includes most (approx 54) of the colonies.

Thanks for researching all.

Hi Waldner,
Just on the off chance, you wouldn't happen to still have a web
address for the map you had but lost? Or any other old addresses that
contained the info?

Hello kutsavi,

If I had to guess I would say feesh.org or something like that. I
really am not sure though what it was. Probably was feefhs.org but I
have already checked that site and not been able to come up with
anything.

I have found a map specifically of 54 Hutterite colonies in
Saskatchewan. The numbers on the map are small, but I think that you
will be able to decipher them.

I have also found a long list of Hutterite colines in Alberta founded
through at least 1996. You can use this list in tandem with a
clickable map of "German" settlements, including Hutterite colonies.
It is not a printable map (but rather an applet), but you can see the
location of each colony you choose, and you can choose as many
colonies you want at the same time to view on the map.

Would these maps be sufficient?

Hi again Waldner,

If you could tell me where on the FEEFHS web site you found the map,
and the approximate year you found it, I might be able to dig it up
again for you.

Hi waldner,

Usually I don’t submit partial answers but in accordance to your
clarification I’m making an exception.:)

Researching this was harder than expected. The only map I could find
that fits your criteria is of Saskatchewan. As I posted in my
clarification, it is a scaled map of all ethnic settlements including
Hutterites.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~cansk/maps/ethnic-bloc.html

The Hutterian colonies are designated by triangles with numbers on
them (see top of page). Each number represents a colony.
On the following site is the list of colonies numbered in accordance
with the map. As you requested there are 54 colonies.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~cansk/maps/hutterite.html

Source of the above sites: Rootsweb – Atlas of Saskatchewan

**********************************

The only site I found regarding Hutterite colonies in Alberta is a
list of the colonies and their location. Included is the year they
were founded and the founding colony.

- Alberta Hutterite Colonies -

**********************************

Search words used:
Saskatchewan map “Hutterite colonies”
Saskatchewan “map of” Hutterian colonies
Alberta Hutterite colonies map
Alberta Hutterian colonies map

I hope the information I provided is helpful. If you have any
questions regarding my answer please don’t hesitate to ask.
Best regards,
rainbow-ga

Thank you rainbow!

ATTN: kutsavi-ga I really have no idea :( The website is my best guess
but I cannot get any closer.

ATTN: justaskscott-ga

I am not sure if the map will be useful to me. Is the Sask map the one
that I posted in the question?
http://www.agrivision.sk.ca/Cluster/Urban%20Structure/Hutterite%20Colonies.jpg
It sounds suspiciously similar. :P

I have a list of the Alberta colonies that is quite recent but I need
to be able to measure roughly the distance between the parent colony
and the child colony. I am not sure if this is possible on the
clickable map you are talking about, but it could be. I don't mind
measuring on screen with a ruler as long as there is a scale. My data
does not have to be that exact but should be decently close. I would
definately post a new question for you if I can use it! The problem
with the maps bobbie listed is I have no idea which one is which but I
will be posting a small reward for him/her.

I am going to post a few questions for those who have spent time
researching to reward you for your time. I need this info within next
hour though (4:00 AM CENTRAL TIME) if I am to use it because I need to
start working with what I have.

I got an A+ on this assignment!!! Your research help me seal a chink
in my thesis. I was able to recover from that nasty B+ from first
term. It appears that I can no longer tip you since too much time has
passed but am hoping this will make up for it.

waldner,

The map that bobbie7 found for you is marked with designations of
"Hutterian" colonies. Since the terms "Hutterian" and "Hutterite" are
used interchangeably on many websites, I do believe that bobbie7's
information is worth a second look.

Hello pinkfreud,

The problem is that the colonies are not marked (there is no way for
me to know which one is which). The squares are fine, but not
labelled. :(

I failed to notice the Saskatchewan map in your question; the one I
found is the same. And unfortunately, there's no scale on the Alberta
map. So perhaps it will not be useful to you (or at least no more
useful than the Sask map).
