Profile

"Ambit Biosciences is a private corporation whose mission is to
develop successful new drugs by identifying and exploiting the unknown
targets of biologically active peptides and small molecules. Using its
proprietary ProteomeScanTM technologies, Ambit discovers novel, yet
validated, drug targets by employing molecules that exert important
biological effects through unknown mechanisms. Ambit identifies these
'drugable' protein targets and develops small molecules and antibodies
that can be used to address important conditions and improve human
health.

Approaches that attempt to address the biological role of expressed
proteins (often termed "proteomics") are difficult, expensive, have
rather low throughput and do not address the fundamental objective of
finding molecules that bind human proteins and modulate activity.
Ambit's approach leap-frogs difficult steps in conventional genomic
and proteomic methods and goes to the heart of the problem by directly
screening a significant fraction of the human proteome, in a parallel,
rapid, efficient and scalable manner, for those proteins that are
bound by biologically active small molecules or peptides. This gives
Ambit the ability to rapidly and efficiently identify therapeutically
relevant drug targets, and provides significant commercial
opportunities.

Ambit's approach to identifying human proteins that bind small
molecules or peptides is based upon the combination of protein display
and affinity chromatography. This proprietary method, termed
ProteomeScanTM, employs a novel twist on conventional phage display
methodology that allows Ambit to interrogate large and diverse
collections of proteins simultaneously. With ProteomeScanTM, Ambit can
directly identify protein targets and clarify mechanisms of action by
the parallel screening of thousands of phage-displayed human proteins
against any chosen molecule."

Profile --
"HK Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a privately held drug discovery company
using a proprietary, patented approach to discover and characterize
the therapeutically important protein targets and to develop new,
highly efficient and safe drugs to treat human diseases.

The Company was founded in August 2001 by Hubert Köster, Ph.D., an
internationally renowned biochemist and entrepreneur. Today, in
addition to Dr. Köster, several of the world's leading scientists are
members of HK Pharmaceuticals' scientific board, including Dr. John
Walker, a 1997 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, and Dr. Franz Hillenkamp,
the inventor of MALDI mass spectrometry. The Company is headquartered
in San Diego, California.

HK Pharmaceuticals has developed a technology that enables significant
advancements in protein separation, analysis, identification and
characterization. The Company is using its technology to discover and
characterize new therapeutically important protein targets, and
subsequently will develop new drugs to respond to those targets. The
key advantages of HK Pharmaceuticals' approach include the ability to
capture and analyze membrane-bound proteins, the deeper understanding
of a target's molecular function, identification of potential toxic
and side effects before expensive clinical trials, and ultimately more
efficient drugs with fewer side effects and faster and less costly
development.

Proprietary Technology --

HK Pharmaceuticals is quickly building its library of proprietary
Capture Compounds™ that separate on demand individual or closely
related proteins from complex biological mixtures, including
membrane-bound proteins, which are involved in critical signaling and
other important pathways, but are elusive for study by today's
analytical methods.

The Company is also building a bank of disease samples and using
in-house cell sorting and tissue culture techniques to replicate their
proteomes, providing medically relevant starting materials.

Proteins that are relevant to the disease demonstrate different
properties in the healthy versus the disease samples. HK
Pharmaceuticals identifies the proteins as known or novel using mass
spectrometry and by comparison with public genome and protein
databases. The Company also uses mass spectrometry to determine the
precise location and identity of amino acid substitutions and
post-translational modifications.

Once a potential drug target is identified and structurally
characterized, HK Pharmaceuticals uses high throughput cell-based
assays to gain deeper insight into its function. Among other steps,
the target's biological function is studied using proprietary,
patented knockin/knockout methods.

HK Pharmaceuticals then screens the targets for interactions with
novel compounds using limited rational design or existing chemical
libraries, resulting in new chemical entities (NCEs) ready for
pre-clinical workup. With a much greater understanding of the target,
the Company is capable of testing for and minimizing toxic drug side
effects before entering clinical trials by iteratively testing the
promising NCEs in cellular environments to ensure that they only
interact with their desired target."

Profile
"ILLUMINATING THE PATH TO SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY --
Quantum Dot Corporation is commercializing a powerful new tool that is
revolutionizing biological discovery. The company's pioneering work is
predicated on quantum dot (Qdot) particles, tiny semiconductor
crystals developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Melbourne, and
Indiana University.

Critical to pharmaceutical and biological research is the ability to
label, detect, and study biological materials such as DNA, cells, and
proteins. Nanometer-sized QdotTM particles provide massively parallel,
yet simple and inexpensive, solutions for a plethora of biological
research problems in genetic analysis, drug discovery, and
diagnostics.

Qdot particles light up when light is directed at them: put simply,
they glow. Qdot nanocrystals can be used in ways similar to dyes, but
offer numerous advantages due to unusual optical properties. When a
simple blue or ultraviolet light is shined on Qdot crystals-lasers
aren't necessary-they emit any color of choice. Conversely, multiple
dyes typically require light from several lasers, keyed to each color,
which increases cost and assay complexity. In contrast, Qdot particles
can easily label and detect multiple targets simultaneously with
simple, low-cost instruments.

As highly photo-stable encoding agents, water-soluble Qdot particles
can be specifically attached to a spectrum of biological materials
from cells and proteins, to nucleic acids. This 'multiplexing' expands
the range of parameters a scientist can look at concurrently, and
dramatically increases throughput and sensitivity while decreasing
assay costs in life science research.

Quantum Dot was co-founded in November 1998 by accomplished
entrepreneur, former CEO and President of Argonaut Technologies, Joel
Martin, PhD, and entrepreneur and inventor (holder of 25 patents and
founder of Biometric Imaging, and Molecular Dynamics) Bala Manian,
PhD. The company completed second-round financing from preeminent
venture groups in the spring of 2000...."

Profile
"Triad Therapeutics integrates structural biology and medicinal
chemistry to accelerate the discovery and development of potent, small
molecule drugs. The company leverages its expertise in NMR protein
structure analysis and bioinformatics to determine only that
structural information needed to quickly engineer customized,
drug-like, small molecule inhibitors. By using a gene family approach,
where structural information from one protein may be applied to
members of the same family, Triad dramatically shortens the path
between drug target and lead compound identification from two to five
years to about two months.

Triad's development strategy is to license nanomolar inhibitors at
various stages of development. Triad will seek partnerships with
pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to discover/develop
high-affinity, nanomolar chemical leads. In parallel, Triad will
further develop some inhibitors before partnering. Triad will
initially pursue drug targets classified as cofactor-dependent
enzymes, which contain two binding sites. These targets have utility
across multiple therapeutic areas because these enzyme families, which
include kinases and oxidoreductases, account for approximately 15% of
all proteins.

Pharmaceuticals acting on cofactor-dependent enzymes already exist on
the market. In FY2000, drugs targeting oxidoreductases, which include
the statins commonly used to treat cardiovascular disease, generated
over $20B in sales. Compounds acting against transaminases and
decarboxylases generated sales approaching $1.5B. Another important
class of cofactor-dependent enzymes is the kinase family, which
represents an emerging class of drug targets in the control of cancer
and many chronic diseases. "

Profile
"Virtual Arrays is pioneering a versatile platform technology to
accelerate the discovery of new medicines by transforming the
rate-limiting steps in drug discovery through multi-dimensional
cellular information.

Virtual Arrays' proprietary technology platform addresses one of the
fundamental issues facing the discovery of new biological and small
molecule therapeutics. It is well recognized that the productivity of
putting new candidates into clinical development has not improved
despite significant investment in new technologies. With the large
increase in the number of targets moving from the genome project into
primary screening laboratories, there is a growing need to accelerate
the critical process of converting hits to leads. Virtual Arrays
addresses this problem with a new and powerful technology that enables
highly parallel analysis of information-rich biological readouts.

At the center of Virtual Arrays technology are proprietary CellCardTM,
classes of microcarriers that have unique, identifiable codes, similar
to barcodes. Using CellCard technology and state-of-the-art imaging
capabilities, scientists can evaluate potential new drug candidates
more thoroughly and productively compared to current sequential
methods. The Company's founding team includes biologists and software
engineers with extensive experience with Silicon Valley start-ups. The
Company is backed by Alta Partners, Skyline Ventures, Three Arch
Partners, Sofinnova Ventures and Mediphase Venture Partners."

"Company Overview - XenoPort, Inc. is an early-stage biopharmaceutical
company that is a leader in development and application of new
technologies to enhance the bioavailability of drugs by exploiting the
function of specific proteins involved in active transport of
molecules into and through cells. Molecular recognition by these
natural transport systems promises to provide a predictable strategy
for drug delivery into cells and across tissue barriers such as the
intestinal epithelium and blood-brain barrier. The powerful tools of
combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening, which have
greatly increased the efficiency of compound synthesis and evaluation
in the early stages of drug discovery, are being applied for the first
time to provide mechanism-based solutions to problems of poor drug
bioavailability. XenoPort's initial focus is the exploitation of
transporter proteins for improving the oral absorption of small
molecule, peptide and protein drugs. Orally administered compounds
have traditionally had the greatest potential to achieve blockbuster
commercial status and, in contrast to other delivery strategies, offer
advantages of convenience, improved patient compliance and relatively
low development and usage costs. The medical and business benefits of
effective technology that improves oral bioavailability across
multiple drug classes are enormous. The Company intends to form
relationships with pharma/biotech companies seeking to improve the
oral bioavailablity of their proprietary molecules. In addition, the
Company is applying its technology to compounds with expired patents
to provide newly patented improved medicines..."

to proteomics a highly parallel and high throughput analysis
capability that was essential to the advancement of genomics. The
company has successfully integrated protein biochemistry with advanced
materials science and microfabrication to create the first
miniaturized biochips containing high-density arrays of functional
proteins. This permits thousands of measurements to be conducted on
very small and complex samples. These measurements include protein
concentration, protein structure, protein function, and protein
interactions. The ability to conduct these highly parallel and
sensitive measurements on proteins will play a critical role in the
discovery, development and possibly even the commercialization of a
new generation of drugs. Zyomyx' lead product is the Protein Profiling
biochip designed to identify and validate novel drug targets,
biomarkers, and new therapeutic and diagnostic entities. "
