Please help me to find all available biographical details of the
Japanese writer Yei Theodora Ozaki (including her origins and
immediate family). She was the author of "Japanese Fairy Tales"
published in the first decade of the twentieth century. She married
the Japanese statesman Yukio Ozaki who died in 1954. She was born in
Scotland, nee Morrison. Her father's elder brother is said to have
translated the Bible into Chinese and to be buried in Macau. Thank you
very much.

Greetings Momp:

I happen to have that book and it's one of my favorites. I especially
like "The Jellyfish and the Monkey" because I was born in the year of
the Monkey. My friends would tell you the animal's characteristics
suit me well. lol

I discovered a few references at Questia but it is a subscription
service and I am not a member. However, you may want to join their
service to view the links. The top 3 book titles that came back in a
search for "Theodora Ozaki" that appeared to pertain mostly to her
profession were:

Encyclopedia of Literature
Book by Joseph T. Shipley; Philosophical Library, 1946
Subjects: Literature--History And Criticism, Literature--Dictionaries,
Indexes, Etc

The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature
Book by Humphrey Carpenter, Mari Prichard; Oxford University Press,
1999
Subjects: Children's Literature--Dictionaries

The Art of the Story-Teller
Book by Marie L. Shedlock; Dover Publications, 1952
Subjects: Storytelling, Children's Stories, Children's
Literature--Bibliography, Activity Programs In Education

Then, 2 more looked interesting as personal life contributions:

All Her Paths Are Peace : Women Pioneers in Peacemaking
Book by Michael Henderson; Kumarian Press, 1994
Subjects: Women Pacifists--Biography

The Beginning of Heaven and Earth: The Sacred Book of Japan's Hidden
Christians
Book by Christal Whelan; University of Hawaii Press, 1996
Subjects: Catholic Church--Japan--Membership,
Crypto-Christians--Japan, Japan--Church History, Kakure Kirishitan

I hope another Researcher has more luck with locating the information
you seek. It may be only available from a Japanese source. I have a
friend in the Tokyo area and I've sent her an email asking if she can
find something on the Japanese web for me. I wish I could read the
Japanese language.

I'll let you know if she finds anything.

Dear Journalist-ga (it sounds rather like the honorific Tibetan
'name-la'),

Thank you for your prompt and personal response--not that it actually
answered my question yet. It is thoughtful of you to ask the help of
your friend in Tokyo. Actually, I am enquiring on behalf of my wife
who is Japanese and in Tokyo right now, and I will shortly be joining
her there. I should have advised her to check the Japanese sources
herself. She is the granddaughter of Yei Teodora--and a rabbit, by the
way, while I am a horse (we are not as incompatible as that sounds).
Is your name lol? momp-ga

I won't attempt to answer until I have enough info that I think would
make a solid answer. I did hear from Kazue this morning and she
wasn't immediately familiar with the Ozaki's life, and she said she'd
inquire around and check the Japanese web. Kazue sent me the Fairy
book many years ago.

I did run across a play that included Ozaki as a character. Titled
"The Chrysanthemum and the Rose: A Diplomat's Wife in Japan" based on
the book "A Diplomatist's Wife in Japan" by Mary Crawford Fraser.
It's featured on the site of the Tokyo Actors Repertory Theater at
http://www2.gol.com/users/tarc/play.html.

I found it from the link http://www2.gol.com/users/tarc/mary.html
where the page seems titled "Mary Crawford Fraser." On that site
there is an image of a scene from the play where Ozaki appears.

You might check with the theater and inquire if they know who wrote
the play. The author may know more about Ozaki. The phone number is
(03) 3269-5054. I'll let you know if kazue discoveres anything.
